Major problem

Hopefully, someone can give me a pointer into a major problem I suffered today Big Cry
I was driving up the ramp of a multi storey carpark , when I heard/felt a grinding sound and the car started to roll backwards, although it was in drive ? No warning lights no nothing ? I switched off with my foot on the break , waited 5 minutes and back on again . When I engaged drive again , a horrible grinding/banging sound and again started to roll backwards although I was revving the engine ? The same sound happened when put into reverse and no reverse drive ???
I managed to roll down the ramp backwards onto level ground , ordered a taxi for wife and kids to go back to hotel (I’m on holiday Big Cry ) And while waiting for recovery truck tried in sport mode but no joy !!!!
On the plus side (if there is a plus side Rolling with laughter ) when I engaged rock crawl , it did move forward and backwards ???
Now I know this is going to cost me big time , and I’m prepared for the worst tomorrow when I get the garage report Rolling Eyes but do you guys think it needs a new gearbox ??
It’s never had any major problems since I’ve owned it (2 1/2 years) and is maintained and pampered regardless of cost .
Any help/guidance greatly recieved Thumbs Up

Only a guess but possibly transfer box chain/clutch worn and slipping or something like that.

I think you probably need Disco Mikey, but as the transfer box is on the backend of the transmission it may be able to be removed without removing the whole transmission but as I say the possible cause of the problem was only a suggestion, sorry that I can't really be of any more help.

Without seeing the car, It sounds like a diff has collapsed, or the gearbox/transfer box splines have worn away

In your opinion, which would you say is the worst of the two evil’s ? I’m clueless, and more concerned about the repair time , rather than the cost issue . But that said I’d rather have some (even if very little) knowledge, when they ring and baffle me with mechanics .

I'm going to be optimistic and suggest a CV joint. Many years ago a CV joint went on my Discovery 300tdi and I seem to recall loss of drive until I selected the diff lock. Probably a lot cheaper than the alternatives. Good luck.

I'd guess the splines on one of the output flanges from the transfer box have failed. Putting it in rock crawl will lock the centre diff hence the ability to regain some drive. As the noise is said to have been present before trying to move, that would suggest the CV is not the culprit - hopefully I'm wrong as that would be a cheap fix.

Transfer box is a single item that can be replaced separately from the gearbox. It can also be split open and the drive flanges (the bits with the splines in them) can be replaced individually - had the front output flange replaced on my old TDV8 once. Hopefully the output splines from the gearbox are ok as replacing them is a full gearbox strip/rebuild - had that done too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I’ve had a phone call from the garage , who said they managed to reverse my car off the low loader , and it did engage drive and drove into their unit ???
They will update me later when the technician has a look at it .

That would also cause the same loss of drive, though I have personally never seen a D3/Sport CV joint fail completely. Fingers crossed Thumbs Up

UPDATE.....

Spoke to the garage earlier , and was told that the front offside drive shaft has collapsed ?
Also the wheel bearing had sheared and will need replacing . I did ask would this cause the noise I heard when it failed , and cause my car not to select drive or reverse ? I was informed that this “could” be the case ???
Now call me sceptical , but “could” be the case didn’t fill me with confidence !!!!
Quoted £675 which I thought didn’t sound too bad ??
hopefully get the car back Friday , and get it to my local Indy asap to be checked out properly Thumbs Up

Drive shaft has collapsed? Presumably they mean the CV joint. Not sure what they mean by the bearing shearing. Presumably they mean the stub axle.

Got to be worth going and asking to be shown the damage. A photo or two wouldn't go amiss. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
