If you mean the daytime running lights on the front of the car, they are a legal requirement on cars and vans type approved since February 2011. (A later date for HGVs and buses). They must come on and remain on automatically.

They are part of the car’s safety equipment, why on earth would you want to disable safety equipment? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Laughing

Steve (OP) are you UK or EU based? If so no you can't turn them off as they are required by law. Not sure about other markets - why don't you like them? I think they look great.

Personally IMHO I think DLR's look crap. Why drive around in bright sunshine with your lights on. I seemed to have got on alright over the years switching my lights on and off when required, without it being dictated to.

Yes agree to a point. But DLRs are mainly so that other road users and pedestrians in particular can see you. If they have saved a few lives by making a car just that much more visible and again in particular to children, elderly or partially sighted then I am all for them.

I like seeing all the elaborate designs each manufacturer are coming up with for their DRLs. Each is trying to get an identity with them. Some look cool and some look weird! I like the RRS ones personally. MY16 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography in Aleutian silver, stealth pack and toys.

DLRs are a European requirement that were lobbied for by the Scandinavians, as it was thought to be a good safety measure in their twilight world.

I just think there was a missed opportunity to make it so that the rear lights came on too to guard against those ninnies who forget to turn their lights on.

But overall, I agree, that I am against driver aids, autonomous and connected vehicles and all that nonsense. I am enthusiastic about driving, not watching some daft machine make a mediocre job of trying to do that for me.

It still amazes me how many people drive around with only DRL’s on in heavy rain, fog and twilight not realising that they haven’t got any proper lighting switched on, especially they have no tail lights. On the Evoque forums we managed to persuade LR that Evoque should have daylight running tail lights and they enabled them for 2013MY............. but have once again disabled them since 2017MY. My RRS has DRL taillights but I think that 2018MY doesn’t and I don’t see the logic in disabling them. Do people not look at their car controls these days before they start a trip and check that they have things properly set up? One of the questions we used to see frequently on the Evoque forums was “ If I set the lights to auto, how do I know when they have switched on?” Often the reply was RTFM because the question was asked so often. Auto-on headlights still have a design fault regardless of the make of car - if you have been in fog and over-ridden the auto on function they will auto-off again as soon as you turn the switch to auto and it is still daylight - the system needs to have a check circuit that will not switch off the main lights if the front and rear high intensity fog lights are switch on. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes, the danger of DRLs is that people probably think that they do not need to switch on headlights in poor visibility. If indeed they think at all. Also, auto headlights I find very unsatisfactory. Surely it is the driver`s responsibility to ensure that the correct lights are on. So let the driver switch them on.

Very glad to have found this thread as I thought I was going bonkers. I'm 99% sure that up until recently, my RRS did not have daytime running tail lights. But now I've noticed that it does. Guessing this was an update the last time it went to the dealers?? Or me just not noticing beforehand? Current:
2016 Range Rover Sport 3.0 SDV6 HSE in Zanzibar
2011 Mini Cooper Convertible

Gone:
2013 Evoque 2.2 SD4 Pure Tech Pack White
