United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

That's stuff you would expect on a 90k mile RRS - suspension bushes. Oh, and you might not want your home address so prominently visible online... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

1. Offside front lower control arm has play in bushes,

2. Both rear wishbone bushes split

3. Steering rack has play in it, the steering wheel has 5-7 degrees play in it before it actually turns the wheels, internal fault with rack, new one needed

Above is what is wrong with the car after taking it to my local garage after it felt "floaty" and also metal grinding noises when going around roundabouts.

I have spoken to the selling garage and advised put it right or refund me the monies. The chap seems a stand up guy so fingers crossed

With regards my address, what does it matter of you know where i live?

Thanks 2006 RRS Supercharged 4.2 HST muthuaflecka!

RESPONSE FROM GARAGE :

Prior to the vehicle going on sale it was subject to a thorough inspection at an independent garage who carry out inspections and any remedial work required as instructed by me. They found no fault with the vehicle in any areas and the inspection includes a road test. It is not in their interest to not report on required work as they will then get the business of repairing or replacing any components or serviceable items as necessary. When selling used cars, ensuring the roadworthiness of them is my paramount concern coming before cosmetic condition, cleanliness or any other facet of the sale process. My monthly bill at this garage often runs into several thousands of pounds which is all spent on making sure that the cars are safe and fit to drive and are operating as well as they can be commensurate with the age and mileage of each specific vehicle. In addition to the inspection that I had carried out on 18/06/2018 at 91,306 miles the car had also recently passed an MOT test on 27/04/2018 at 90,708 miles. This MOT was carried out by the previous owner at a completely different garage and not only did it pass but it had no advisory items whatsoever. The suspension components and steering rack are all checked on an MOT and if excessive play is found then the car will fail the MOT. If any of the items checked are found to have some play but not excessive then they are likely to be noted down as an advisory to let the owner or future owners know that these items are safe and functional for now but may need attention in the future. Once we had a sale finalised and I had agreed to your request of delivering the car to Chiswick on 29/06/2018 where we met for the handover, I personally drove the car to meet you which is approximately 20 miles including motorways and smaller side roads. The car in my opinion drove superbly whether at motorway speeds or on slower, bumpier roads. I was in complete confidence that I was supplying you with a car that was roadworthy, fit for purpose and as good as it could be commensurate with it being 12 years old and having covered over 90,000 miles.

It was then on 04/07/18 that you emailed me to say you had concerns about the air compressor being faulty as the car felt to you as though it didn't handle correctly. It was agreed that the car would be inspected at an independent garage ( Germantech ) near to you to save you the journey of bringing it to Watford to be checked. You also reported more concerns about the handling and noises when steering before the car could get to the garage. It was then inspected on 11/07/18 at 91,511 miles and the report stated that play was found in the steering rack, O/S/F lower control arm and both rear lower wishbone bushes were split. Sanjeev then supplied prices for the replacement of these items stating that they needed replacing. I spoke with Sanjeev today,12/07/18 and didn't get as clear cut definition as needing replacing more that these were just items that they would recommend replacing.

I am really struggling to see how any items that have been checked by two different garages with the same methods as described by Sanjeev can suddenly be at fault especially given the low mileage that has taken place between checks. The summary of these checks is below. Also my experience of driving the car from when I delivered it to you is completely at odds with your description of how it steers and handles.

27/04/18 - 90,708 miles - MOT - No advisories
18/06/18 - 91,306 miles - P.D.I - No advisories
11/07/18 - 91,511 miles - Inspection - play found in multiple items and split bushes found.

I would have expected these items to have at least been flagged up on one of the two prior inspection/MOT tests that were carried out by completely different garages considering that there has only been 803 miles travelled since the MOT in April.

I have been in the car trade for approximately 11 years now and fully understand the need to support customers once a purchase has been made and accept that it is part and parcel of the job. There are times when no matter how many checks you do, components can then fail sometimes shortly after sale. This is no different from when at home you may have a washing machine that is several years old that works perfectly well one day and then the next day the pump fails. All mechanical and electrical components have a lifecycle that can sometimes end prematurely and without warning when they were previously functioning correctly. If this were the case then the warranties I provide with each car sold come into effect to ensure the customer is not left with an unexpected bill due to an unforeseen component failure. There are also times when some components or sensors that may not be covered under the warranty are replaced by me as a goodwill gesture which again is a business cost that I accept as part of providing a good service. In this instance however the items that are deemed to be at fault are not mechanical or electrical components which can suddenly fail without warning but suspension and steering parts that are subject to wear and tear. This is why they are part of the MOT test and the pre-delivery inspection because prior to their failure and subsequent replacement you will be able to see and test the level of wear to guide you as to when they will require replacing. This is where I am having such a hard time understanding the findings of Germantechs report as if it were correct I believe these concerns would have been picked up on a prior inspection or felt by me when I drove the car. If the item concerned was a mechanical or electrical part such as an ABS pump or starter motor I could understand a sudden failure as that can happen even if it was working correctly at the time of the P.D.I .

I feel that at this stage the only way forward I can suggest before I could make any decision on potential work that may or may not need carrying out is to have the car looked at again by ********** I would like it to be with you in attendance so that you can sit alongside myself and then a technician whilst road testing the vehicle to describe the concerns you have over the handling and ride characteristics to see if they or I concur with you. We will then all be there together and be able to witness the vehicle when it is on a ramp checking for play in the suspension components and steering rack to see if they agree with the findings from ******* If you can let me know a suitable time that you can bring the vehicle to be checked then I will book it in with them. In the meantime Sanjeev gave me no indication that the vehicle is not safe to drive.

I look forward to hearing from you with a date and time that you can bring the car here for the inspection and hope that once inspected we will be able to find a mutually satisfactory outcome. 2006 RRS Supercharged 4.2 HST muthuaflecka!

I think the seller's response seems fair enough. It certainly looks like he wants to resolve the matter to your satisfaction but I can understand his comments too.

But before you agree, quietly take it to another garage that do a free health check inspection.

I can recommend one near me in central London who I have been using for a few years and they are LR specialists. They are very trustworthy and reliable and are the oldest working garage in the UK!

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

Yes, they did one on both of my cars but give them a ring as it was a while ago.
They are called Belgravia Garage (despite the name they are still cheaper (and better) than LR main dealers and in that area Land Rovers are as common as black cabs so they know these cars inside out, but anyway they should still do a free inspection). Their number is 02072359900
I have no association with them other than that I have had fantastic and reliable service from them and I trust them. 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue
