I am starting to track down some of the service history. What I have so far is: -

Service at Stratstone 4/4/2014 at 23,529 miles
Service at Looker Land Rover Battersea 16/2/2015 at 29,370 miles
New Engine Stratstone 7/9/2015 at 33,231 miles (that was a BIG bill!)

So it has done just over 10,000 miles on new engine (current mileage 44,000) but hasn’t been serviced for over 2 years. My company brought the car in February 2013.

I’m still trying to see if I can find more.

Do you think a little more attractive now or still run away?

if it's had a new engine 10000 miles ago, and the concensus seems to be that crankshafts tend to snap at less than 20,000 miles if they're going to go (but not always), I'd still run away. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

I’ve asked Stratstone to confirm if the engine fitted was post the crankshaft bearing issue fix.

I would imagine that as it hasn’t been serviced in two years that if anything went bang now you would get no help whatsoever from JLR............. £17000 for a new engine.......... it’s more than the car is worth today 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Snapped crankshafts, a new engine and lack of history, I’d run away, straight into a 5.0 SC Mr. Green .

It was serviced every year until the engine change. The engine change was due to the known crankshaft issue (I’ve seen the paperwork from Stratstone). Nothing has been done since end of September 2015 isn’t great by any means, but it has only done 10,000 miles since September 2015. But it has had tyres and pads in this time at MOT(s).

New SDV6 engines are snapping cranks. It's not an issue of "engines before X date did and now they don't". Don't believe otherwise. A new engine that hasn't been serviced to LR schedule won't see them helping out again. They'll walk away and leave you with a £18k bill.

You asked for our views on this vehicle and the consensus is that it's a high risk. You seem to want to argue otherwise. You have set yourself to get this vehicle because it seems like a good deal; but you know it's loaded with problems or you wouldn't be arguing the issue on here. Head/heart moment for you then. Head says "noooo", heart says "yaaaaaaayy!". Time to choose. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

A friend of mine has just bought an approved used Disco4 SDv6 HSE Lux from a main dealer - he was rightly concerned about snapping cranks but after pressuring the dealership he has it in writing that provided he maintains the car in accordance with JLR requirements with LR parts then for the next 5 years they will replace the engine at JLR’s cost should he suffer a snapped crank. It is possible to circumvent JLR’s reluctance to admit to the problem however the car must have a full MD service history and it took a lot of working on both the dealer and JLR to get the agreement IN WRITING.

Regarding later engines failing - is this not more to do with excessive use of Adblue causing oil dilution? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thank you all for your replies.

RRSTDV6 - I wasn’t arguing I was just updating you all on the information as I was able to find more of the service history. I respect the information you have all given me. As such I have decided not to buy it. It is a beautiful car but the risk with the engine is not something I want to expose myself to.

Thanks to all again.

Oil dilution is caused by partial DPF regen cycles. The excess fuel required to heat the exhaust gas and thus the DPF dilutes the oil. Because the engine is constantly trying to regen the DPF it constantly overfuels. That's my understanding of it, anyway.

Adblue is injected post-engine so shouldn't get near tje oil. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I would not go near it without a full service history, If the crank goes pop, then I think JLR would not be interested.

how do you check the service history from that link ?
