Gearbox failure warning on dash

Haven't posted on here for a while as I sold my RR Sport, last October, but i brought a new shape (64 plate) in November today when the wife was driving it a message came up on the dash saying gearbox fault car shut down, would not restart - she called the RAC they came out looked at it, the guy managed to start it and shut it off imeaditely saying I can do anything with that, she is now waiting for the recovery truck to pick her up, we have done around 4000 miles in the car since we brought it, ts little over 30k on the clock now - and I think the 6 months warranty has just run out - anyone had anything similar! Forgot to mention since we have owned it its been back in to have an engine oil sensor which they had the car in for over a week at landcover main dealer. About to get into a sport

Update, so when the wife finally got back last night, she told me that when the RAC man turned up, when he tried to start it there was no power, he then set up a battery charger and jump pack from his fan - she said when the incident first happened the noise was horrible - I wonder why it would have no power! could it be the starter jammed in and thats what the noise is, the car is still at the recovery firms depot as it had completely shut done they struggled to get it on the truck! About to get into a sport

Doesn’t sound like a stuck starter, esp if it was driving ok before hand, I wouldn’t think that would kill power. I’m assuming you mean a complete loss of electrical power, i.e. no lights, horn, dash, radio etc.

If you had a gearbox warning message I would take it as read, there is a problem with the box. Did she get the message on engine start, on moving to drive, or when actually moving? If moving under power, the noise will simply be the parts in the box not interacting correctly between the engine side and the driven side. I think you need a gearbox specialist!! 2012 5.0 SC AB

She was driving at the time, when the RAC guy turned up he tried to start it, the battery had no power in it, why would it be flat if a gearbox fault - the car is four months out of manufacturers warranty too its a January 2015 Range Rover Sport with a little over 30k on the clock - full history etc etc I just can't believe it - I am sure Land Rover will just say its out of warranty!!! About to get into a sport

I know zero about the Land Rover gearbox but if the battery is dead, it may be worth having it tested. I take it you have no lights, horn etc either. 2012 5.0 SC AB

The gearbox is like all modern things and has an ECU, these are very sensitive to even a tiny voltage drop and a low battery or a faulty alternator can throw up all sorts of strange warnings on the dash. It could be that if you battery is the original then it has come to the end of it’s life! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Well best of luck, I hope it’s as easy as a new battery. That would save a lot of pain in the ass and in the pocket. 2012 5.0 SC AB

I am very impressed so far with Jaguar Land Rover Customer Care - they have replied to the email I sent them earlier today.
