Canada 2007 Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 HSE Chawton White
P0128-00 (E8) 2007 RRS

Hello,

I am in Canada with a 2007 4.4 Petrol V8 RRS

I am getting a check engine light and code P0128-00 (E Coolant thermostat (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature). I have replaced thermostat and it appeared to be bad as seal was folded over. Still was throwing code so I replaced the coolant temp sensor. It still doesn't seem to be reaching proper temp, maxing out around 68 degrees Celsius.

The radiator cooling fan seems to be running all the time. Is this normal or should it only run at a certain temp?

I have the Gap Diagnostic tool to monitor and check ecu's

The temperature here right now is around +8 degrees Celsius

Anyone dealt with this issue? Any suggestions on where to go next?
Thanks

are they not engine driven fans (vicious)? like the diesel ?

Try turning the air con off for a few days (press eco) and see if that helps.

Hello Wacko
The electro viscose fan should only come on when hot.
With the engine switched off and cool, you should be able to easily rotate the fan, it should 'freewheel' when cold.
My previous 4.2 SC fan would come on due to the sc pump been wired backwards and the charger getting warm, but not the engine. So it is worth checking if there may be any other temp sensors causing the issue. Obviously it has no SC, but I am not fully familiar with the 4.4 and its sensors MY12 RRS HSE

How long should it run after start up?

mechanical ones will always move around

But you should notice a difference to the speed when you turn the air con on and off.

Any recommendations on what would cause my fan to run constantly? Is it a bad relay or clutch? Do I need to replace the fan?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

A little update. My fan does appear to be spinning when ever engine is running however it isn't overly loud. I unplugged it and started the engine and it continued to spin. With the engine off I can spin the fan with my had but there is slight resistance. Is this normal or should it free spin with no resistance.

All the information I find is regarding either a no electronic fan with just a clutch or an electric fan with no clutch. This seems to be both?

Any help appreciated

Hi Wacko,

The fan is an electronic viscous fan, because of the slight resistance you can feel when turning the fan with the engine stopped the fan will spin at all times when the engine is running. However you can hear when the fan is engaged (electronically) as the fan will make significantly more noise (air movement noise, not mechanical) than normal.
When you start the car for the first time the fan is engaged for around a minute or so (it depends on ambient temperature) it will then engage intermittently as an when the engine temps dictate.

My money would be on the system being air locked after the thermostat change. There are a couple of bleed screws, one close to the thermostat housing and a second on-top of the header tank (both screws are identical so that should aid you in locating the one near the thermostat).

If that doesn't work you could try putting come card board in-front of the radiator (between the grill and radiator) this will raise system temps and allow you to see if it's a sensor or not.

Socast,

Thanks very much. That is what I needed to hear, so I can eliminate the fan as the problem.

Cheers 🍻

Could air in the system cause too much cooling? My problem is the engine isn't getting up to proper engine temperature
