Dash-cam for '08 RRS - opinions/recommendations?

Hi all,

After a recent close call Shocked ... I'm thinking of getting one of these installed. I quite like the idea of a rear-view-mirror mounted option. Just wondering if anyone's had one of these fitted and if there are any brands/models to look for/avoid, please.

Cheers,

Rich 2008 RRS HSE Stornoway Grey

I got one of these Co-Pilot CPDVR3 Full HD 1080p LCD Rear-View Mirror Car Dual Camera Dash Cam which fully covers the rear view mirror and has nice 3" screen within mirror which is switchable between forward camera, rear view camera or both.

It also comes with a rear camera which, if wired into the reverse light will switch the mirror to rear view and plenty of cable.

The first one I bought from Tesco petrol station for about £30 and hard wired it into the courtesy light using a step down converter to 5v which cost about £8.

If you're going to hard wire the dash cam it's important to know the voltage of the unit as many of them are 5v and your car's 12v supply will fry them, hence the step down convertor.

However, after a leaky sunroof and heavy rain after about 6 months it shorted the step down convertor and blew the dash cam, not the cameras fault!

The second one I got was on Ebay as Tesco had sold out and it cost £39 but this one felt a bit like a "second" as the mirror part was not very clear but I've lived with it.

However, I do like the functionality, options and look of this unit and to be honest the price is pretty good too.

Hope that helps. 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

very easy. it's plugged in to the cigar lighter socket in the centre console (switches itself on and off when I unlock or lock the doors) and I've run the cable all the way around the glove box, and up the A pillar and across to the rear view mirror area. the cable just tucks in nicely without have to use any fixings. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

Thanks Scrumpy. Yes it does help - interesting option that one - saves obscuring some of the windscreen... 2008 RRS HSE Stornoway Grey

Richy - if you've not yet handed over the dosh, you may want to have a browse through this ...

Might give you a bit more options to consider Thumbs Up Robin

Thanks for this. No dosh handed over yet, so still considering the options. Costco are doing the Cobra IP200 for £40:

So I'm considering getting the Cobra and hard-wiring. I'm definitely no spark though, so I'm looking through the forum for dummy's guides! Lol 2008 RRS HSE Stornoway Grey

I am always dubious about dabbling with electrics especially on the RRS where is can be so temperamental. However it was relatively straightforward to hard wire. In the link I sent you I supplied some pictures of my use of the fuse box behind the glove compartment which I think I got from someone else on the forum. As long as you have purchased the right stuff (e.g. piggy back fuse) and take it steady, you should be fine.

I went for a quite expensive dash cam with parking recording and 2 cameras but I am sure that there are some good ones out there much cheaper. I would suggest that you go for the best day/night camera you can afford as you don't want to go to all the trouble and expense of installing it only to find that when you need it, the picture quality isn't good enough to help. Robin

Thanks Eaters. I've had a look through the link you sent and the pictures of the fuse box etc...

I gather you need to run the wiring from the dashcam, then along the edge of the windscreen, down the windscreen edge uprights and then somehow past the dashboard and into the glovebox to get to the fusebox, where the piggy back fuse comes into play. Is that the gist of it? 2008 RRS HSE Stornoway Grey

Yes that’s it. But the wire can actually be hidden behind headlining and A pillar covers. I think I had a quick search on Youtube for videos on how to remove trim, and even purchased a set of trim tools (not expensive and subsequently often useful for other jobs). Trim fixings were a hidden world to me until this. Still no expert but I’m getting better. And once you decided that the worst that can happen is you break a clip and need to get a replacement, then you get more confident to have a go. And of course you’ve got the experts on the forum to support you if required. Thumbs Up Robin
