My local indy, Venture 4x4, a small outfit with 5 ramps and only 4 mechanics, so not exactly loads of customers on their books, have done 4 V6 Diesel engine swaps in the last 3 months. All Disco 4’s, all with failed cranks.
It’s certainly put me off considering a car with this engine when the time comes to renew mine, will go for a 4.4V8 diesel either in a RRS or a FFRR

Wales 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged HSE Java Black

It appears to be a bit of a problem as they dont know which engine is potentially going to break i was told one that the V6 is basically a V8 with 2 cylinders chopped off because the owners at the time did not want to have to design and build a complete new engine dont know how much truth is in it mind Whistle

if that's the case,,they should have cut the 2 front clyinders off & that would solve the crankshaft snapping problem as it the front of the crank that snaps.

The engines are of the same ‘family’ but the blocks and a lot of other bits, are completely different. For example, the V6 block and V8 block are set at different V angles. One driven cams by chains, the other, belts etc etc. There is plenty different about the two so not really a case of lopping off cylinders

Interestingly, it doesn't seem to be happening with the same engines in Jaguars - not one instance that is known about on the forum I frequent.

And three of the engine failures either here or on the Disco forums were - one at 6years old, one at 8 years and the other at 102K miles and 7 years

I can't think of a manufacturer that would fit new engines FOC at those ages? Well past any "goodwill".

I know there are others at smaller mileages/younger cars, but what I am seeing here doesn't look like anything more than the "expected" failures you get with any marque. I am just trying to get a true, factual handle on the issue, not being any kind of apologist for JLR. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

That is relevant to the current V8 and V6 petrol engines, the diesels are not the same family. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

But guys I was asking have any of you had any PROBLEMS ORDERING a MY18 SDV8 RRS/RR not whether it was the right choice - I have swayed towards the SDV8 as being the right choice but I'm now being told the factory aren't currently making them for some reason ?

Has anyone else got an SDV8 order in the works thats progressing on a MY18 car ?
