Cleaning Side Steps

Hi guys, basically I'm after any ideas on how to takle the side steps, the metal trim piece to be exact, they are lookina little tired. So in after any tips or tricks in order to clean them up? Ideally don't want to wrap or paint then if possible.

Kind regards!

Mine are the same...looks like the actual finish is damaged so I`d be surprised if anything can be done Crying or Very sad Steve.

Cheers for the replys guys, it's frustrating once I've washed the car it looks spot on but then your drawn to the steps and they stick out like a bloody sore thumb! I'll try with some metal polish prehaps on a da to save my elbows!

Kind regards!

Try some abrasive metal Polish,,, I have some meguiars,,,, but use a dishwasher sponge to rub it in initially ( the rough side). I found this helped make a big difference. 2010 RRS, TDV8

If it’s a painted finish then a machine polish with a mini rotary will bring them up, then apply a sealant of sorts to help protect them from the eliments, if they’re bare metal then ide suggest using something like autosol and a very fine grade wire wool, then a polish to bring them back to a gloss finish, and then again some wax or sealant is required to help prevent reoccurring staining. What I wouldn’t do is use metal polish or any kind of abrasive on painted surface as it will be a very short road to ruin. Just as a reference, when I replaced mine I had to have them trims repainted gloss red, a body shop quoted me £180 (that’s clean up prepare and paint and refit). To have them vinyl wrapped I was quoted £50 per side but I had to remove and refit. In the end I went for the most durable finish of powder coating, i removed them, had them shot blasted to clean and powder coated gloss red at £156. and I refitted them.

Here’s mine

Acidic wheel cleaner. wonder wheels brings them up like new. Just leave on for two minutes then wipe off, then seal.
The trim is just unfinished ally. MY12 RRS HSE

I had the same with mine. Bought them from eBay and was dissapointed on first wash when greeted with this. Emailed the seller with pics and got a full refund. My dilemma now is do I replace the whole set with some of better quality or can I remove the aluminium side strips and paint them. I would like to try removing the side strips first. Can anyone tell me how they are held to the steps or have any photos of the fasteners. I have a habit of breaking clips on jobs like this if I don’t know how they are held on.

They are pop riveted on. They can easily be removed by drilling the rivets. The aluminium edges come up like new with acid cleaner and possibly a scotchbrite pad in one direction, to enhance the brushed metal effect. MY12 RRS HSE
