Warranty talk

Crank shaft failure? On the 3.0l sdv6.
Been alot of talk about this not being covered by warranty.
Surely it's covered in the 3 year warranty that comes as standard.
Are people talking about when the vehicle runs out of the 3 year warranty, and as a known fault should be covered as a good will gesture but isn't?
Thanks

Thanks Tim , and the remainder of the 3 year warranty stands with the car even if bought second hand? This is how I've always understood it, however I saw someone try to contradict this on another thread.
Thanks

The LR factory warranty is 3 years from the date of registration, I don’t know about approved used warranty that might run a bit longer BUT as far as we have determined if you have bought extended warrranty then the issue is not covered. You would have to read the terms in any approved used warranty to see if design faults are mentioned. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

It's either a known fault, in which case Land Rover will have to pay, at least for the first 6 years, or it's not a known fault, in which case the warranty will have to pay. I'm sure if neither play ball, given the cost of the replacement engine will be north of £20k, the courts will get to decide who foots the bill (and if properly maintained, it won't be the customer) - and as the dealer sold both the car and warranty, that would be who to sue. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

I would have thought, that if an aftermarket warranty insurer (which is what the JLR "approved" warranty is) claimed "design fault" faced with a broken crank, that the Consumer Rights Act (or SoGA prior to Oct '15) would mean that JLR had to stand by their product up to the 6 year mark.

We might not hear about that because I am pretty sure a confidentiality agreement would be involved along with a new engine.

Unless anyone can tell us different? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I asked for clarity on this as I had just bought a MY16 A/B , the dealer said if the crank went within the 3yr manufacturer warranty it will be fixed FOC even if you bought the car off an non LR dealer . If you buy the vechicle 2nd hand off LR and the crank goes outside of the 3yr manufacturer warranty but within the 2 yr used approved warranty the warranty company will not pay as it's a known issue but LR will fix it out of goodwill as they sell you the warranty with the claim it is the same as the 3yr manufacturer warranty . The problem comes if you buy the car 2nd hand off someone else who had bought the extended warranty and transfered the warranty over to yourself along with ownership of the car , at this point if the crank goes it will not be covered by the warranty company because it is a known fault and neither will LR stand it out of goodwill as you did not buy the warranty off LR and thus they will say they do not owe you good will .
This fits with the story on here about LR not fixing a crank under approved warranty as the car was sold on before the crank went .
So as long as you buy of LR you should be covered , unfortunetly I only learned off this issue after purchase of my RRS off LR and so I just have to hope I am right on this , if I could go back I think given the money involved at risk I think I would of tried to get the dealer to confirm this in writing if possible . Certainly in two years if I extend the warranty I would want this matter clarifiying

Does anyone know how many cranks have failed? A fair few or just the odd one?

I asked this question in another post a while ago and someone came back saying it's only about 1% across the world so not to worry to much about the 3.0 sdv6 I had just bought.
On the crankshaft/warranty post a few weeks ago where it was all kicking off about how bad it was and people saying they won't be buying another Land Rover product, I read the whole 10 pages of it and the only person that had suffered crankshaft failure was Tyrefitters 14 plate car after he sold it.

Unless people on here didn't want to state it had happened to them I don't think it's as common as it was made out to be or have I got this wrong ? 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

I wonder is it an issue that effects a certain few years?
Surely if it's known it should be ironed out on younger cars .

Aparently its not all V6 3.0 engines but its just pot luck if you have a bad one,so if buying one its a 20k gamble wether the crankshaft is going to fail.

Having just paid a deposit on a my15.5 sdv6 AB this is interested. The dealer has told me the 2 year Approved Used Warranty would cover the engine, but also told me they "can tell" which cars may suffer the issue and they do not sell them on as used, but put them straight into auction as its not worth their risk. I wonder how they can tell, is it a certain batch of engines, or are their signs in the on board computer ? If thats true, then you should be OK with a used car from a main dealer - assuming its a directive to all dealers from LR of course !

So if this is the case,WHY did LR sell me mine or if they knew about the problem when I sold it & it still had 12 months LR warranty remaining why haven't they fixed the problem.? So all these independent dealers buying the 3.0's from auctions could come unstuck when or if the crank goes.
