oil level

Hi,

I have been asked by a good friend of mine to look at her RRS.
She has a problem with the oil level warning light stuck on and has been for the last 6 months. The main dealer told her that the sensor is in the sump and is going to cost in excess of £1500 to fix.
She can live with the light on as long as no damage is being done to the engine.

I suggested that I change the oil and filter ( possibly measuring the drained volume to see if the car is using any oil) and refilling it perhaps every 6 months.
A couple of questions;

1. is it easier to take the oil out with a vacuum extractor than to remove all the shielding under the car? Does this remove all the oil?
2. has anyone devised a way of measuring the oil level in the engine? I had thought of using a flexible net curtain wire down the filler cap to act as a dipstick?

Any other useful info greatly received!

Can you tell us if the car is a petrol or a diesel, if it is an L320 or L494 (L320 up to 2013MY then L494) - AFAIK the L320 with the 2.7ltr engine has a dipstick, the post 2010MY diesel cars with the 3.0ltr don’t (they are often referred to Facelift models)
L494 only has electronic oil level indication too and it can cause “loss of communication” messages on the newer car’s dash. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Its the 3 litre diesel engine. The car is a 2011 car.

Australia 2013 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 SE Fuji White

The same model as mine.
If you take it in for a service at an LR dealership they will suck it out of the tube so that is the way to go and how LR recommend it being done.
Still risky not getting the sender fixed as you will not really know what the oil level is.
Cheaper than a new engine to fix it properly!

Sensor loom can also get oil into it which will cause it to malfunction. A few cars on here have had them replaced under warranty. Visitor from fullfatrr.com
