Insurance company recommendations

Just received my insurance renewal and it's gone up from £418 to £587 but nothing has changed with my details so think it will be time to change company's
My parents keep recommending NFU as that's who they have used for the last few years.

There are a few companies offering cheap prices on the internet but not sure I want to use a unheard of company thats mega cheap as I'm sure it would be a pain if I ever needed to claim. 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

I moved my Defender insurance from Land Rover Insurance (who are actually now nothing to do with Land Rover) this year when my premium doubled to over£900. I called them and it was “a mistake, sir, your renewal is now £400” which made me wonder how many people might just have coughed up. After almost 20myears of being insured by them it made me shop around and NFU quoted me £295 on an agreed value and 5,000 miles pa. I asked about offroad use and as my postcode is a farm I was told that offroad use was included in all policies for farm vehicles............. also my Defender is modified from a van to a station wagon- no additional premium 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Will give the local NFU office a call and see what they can do.
Just had a quick look on the comparison sites and they all come up with prices starting in the £700 range.

Car value has dropped, I'm older and nothing else has changed so why is everyone wanting £300 + more than last year ?

Is this the start of thing where diesels cost more to insure and run to push you back to a petrol ! 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

No it isn’t that, it is the cost of claims to repair cars fitted with exotic trinkets like cameras in the bumpers, grilles and wing mirrors that cost a fortune to replace. Adaptive and LED lights also are very expensive to replace, also Land Rover car premiums have been hiked because they are still too easy to steal. The whole idea of insurance is that many pay for the misfortune of the few. I have only ever had one insurance claim for a car repair in 30+ years of driving yet I get hammered for others accidents......... also remember that the number of teenagers learning to drive has fallen drastically so that market is drying up for the insurers. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Another vote for NFU.

My (admittedly) London based insurance with Churchill went up by 1/3 this year but I bought a second car for motorway bashing, used all my NCB on that, moved RRS to Wales and took out a new policy with NFU - £400 inc business & off-road, with winch etc fully declared. NCB would have brought that down obviously

Will get the phone number off my dad and give NFU a try on Tuesday as I'm sure they will not be open today. 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

Had my quote from the NFU and its £400 more than my renewal quote so don't think I will be using that at £950.

Not sure what has changed as my details are the same but renewal quote is £200 more than last years price. 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

i used forum sponsors A-Plan, after the old insurance company quoted very high, unfortunately LRI didn't say it was a mistake and still wanted over £300 more than A-Plan

So off i went and saved me money, though they wasn't as good with the wifes car when that came up

Another big advantage with NFU is Free European cover with unlimited time in Europe. The only other that I could find that does this is SAGA but they were more expensive. NFU seem to like 4x4s and also include trailers. Current Merc GLE 3.5d 2016 model, 2011 RRS HSE standard
Previous 2012 FL2 liked but boot too small
Previous to LR's 3 x Merc E320 estates - fantastic load carriers and long distance cruisers, ultra reliable. Only changed as needed a 4x4 high tow vehicle. Did have a 1955 early LR drop down windscreen and fuel tank under the drivers seat; again very reliable and super rugged.

Insurance now all sorted Thumbs Up
Went on to the website of my current insurers and entered my details for a quote and it came back £50 more than last year which was still £140 cheaper than to renewal price they had sent me so took the quote and paid for it straight away despite not being due for just over 2 weeks as it was still half what most other companies had been quoting me.

Don't understand it myself as my details haven't changed but almost everyone I tried was double what I paid last year so have no idea how they work out insurance prices. 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

Often the business model requires them to get new customers. So there’s a marketing budget to help reduce the quote. Once you’re with them they know that some will leave for other insurers after a year but some won’t. That’s where they make their money. Robin
