Rear end vibration at high speeds and breaking

Evening all, had a run up to Scotland and back yesterday and at higher crushing speeds I noticed some vibration from the rear end. I think it’s the near side (left) also get strong vibration under breaking.

I initially thought wheel ballencing but might also have a separate issue due to the vibration under breaking. Also noted the two rear tyres wearing both outer edges of each tyre with the near side being worn slightly more.

Any ideas would be welcomed. Will hopefully be looking at it in the morning.

Interpreting that literally - your tyres are underinflated.

Try them at 36 psi using an accurate pressure gauge.

If no improvement inspect the rear brakes including the EPB shoes and while you are in there check all the suspension components for wear. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi Paddi,

I checked tyre pressures before I left as I had noted the wearing previously. All set to recommend pressures.. as for the accuracy of the gauge well I can’t vouch for that.

I don’t have a pry bar but inspected both rear ends for wear and all seemed ok.

I would normally suspect tyre ballencing for the high speed vibration and possible warped discs for the breaking... I may just bite the bullet and change the rear tyres for something decent as it currently has Sumita SUV Event tyres with a bucket load of weights on..... Rolling Eyes

Could be warped brake rotors. Could be wheels, tyres or rear diff. Don't know how long you have had the car?

Does anyone know if the callipers can be actuated using the IID tool?

No they can't be actuated. The IID can put the EPB in service mode and has a facility to reset a jammed EPB (does not always work though) and to bleed the brakes. In addition of course it reads any brake related fault codes.

The brakes can be overhauled and adjusted without using. IID tool- see the great 'Bodsy's brake bible'

If you have one or more seized calipers they will be very hot after running so do a comparison by feeling the road wheels.

Vibration could also be a buckled wheel and by the sound of it your low budget tyres and poorly balanced rims will not be helping matters. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

They could be seized in the off ie not breaking. Wheels off to see if working.
