Good news and......BAD! Discs and pads done. He couldn`t change the shoes, as the backing plates were pretty rotten. Luckily he had a spare kit to change springs and whatever so he was able to adjust the EPB (it had gone past it`s limit etc and there was a canbus error too).

But...he said, when it was on the lifter, he had a quick look underneath and said it`s pretty "scabby" and if he was me he`d be getting rid of it in 12 months or so before it turns into a money pit Sad Gutted. Steve.

That's a very general term, did you have the opportunity to look underneath?
What actually is he saying may become/cause a money pit and did you take out a Warranty as I believe you only purchased recently?
I would also get a second opinion if I was you. John

No I didn`t have chance to look as it was all ready by the time I could collect it. I`ll have to ask for more details (wasn`t really thinking as I`ve been on nights).

It came with a 3 month warranty....not sure if anything like this would be covered though.

I thought the same about a second opinion...be worth it definately Thumbs Up Steve.

I`ve just asked him what was up and this is his reply, "Just back plates and things looking bad. Side runners shabby ETC. They`re terrible cars when they get old".

I`m far from an expert but that doesn`t sound too terminal to me! Steve.

Any car can be terrible when it gets old. I would think twice about entrusting your car to someone with this type attitude, regardless of what he "might" know.
Check out everything, get a car inspection if you are worried by RAC etc, and put anything right using your warranty.
What do other members think to this sort of remark from a independent LR garage? Censored John

Yeah good idea Thumbs Up

He`s not actually classed as a LR specialist. He just has his own garage and happens to be a ex LR mechanic. I think I`ll carry on looking for a specialist Laughing Steve.

This doesn't make sense to me. Either the backplates are so rotted away that they are interfering with proper operation of the shoes OR they aren't. There is no 'halfway house' where it just stops the shoes being changed. Plus - it would not be possible to change the springs and retainers without removing the shoes.

This is a hopelessly vague comment and of no use to you at all. Get a full examination done by an experienced trustworthy specialist. If it is any consolation there are very few if any reports on the forum of chassis corrosion of such severity the vehicle was scrapped. They all look rusty underneath. In the event your vehicle really is a rust bucket then you have a case to take up with the seller; if it was a trade deal.
Don't lose heart just yet! Some mechanics do say stupid things to customers for no apparent reason - maybe it makes them feel better about themselves

I agree that they're the same company but even with the discount codes on ECP, prices on CP4L are usually cheaper. You then apply a promo to that and you're on to a good saving Thumbs Up

Check the cost for a set of Brembo disks on both sites.

ECP
-------------------------------------------------
Without Promo = £213.98

With promo (30% off) = £149.79
--------------------------------------------------

CP4L
--------------------------------------------------
Without promo = £149.04

With promo (10% off) = £134.14
--------------------------------------------------

Granted its only £15, but that's 3 pints you can treat yourself too after you've done the work Laughing

Just placed an order with CP4L, front Brembo discs and Brembo pads, £150.00... very happy with that.
