Trackers

I have just acquired a 2012 Range Rover Sport in Baltic Blue and am, so far, very pleased with it.

I am currently insured with Direct Line and they advise me that the vehicle will not be covered for theft unless I fit an approved Tracker device.

I have read through a number of Tracker related threads on the forum, but thought it best to start afresh.

The Land Rover dealership that I bought the vehicle from offered to install a Trackstar Cat 5, and I have seen the Tracker Cat 5 Plus referred to in some of the existing forum threads on the subject.

The Trackstar Cat 5 appears to be the one recommended by Land Rover. I have looked at the facilities of the two trackers and they seem to be very similar, except for the Tracker Cat 5 Plus having the addition of the VHF capability.

I am keen to have the ability to access a record of where the vehicle has been, similar to the tracking facility in Garmin Sat Navs. I think the Tracker Cat 5 Plus has this facility via the internet, but not sure about the Trackstar Cat 5.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these two trackers?

Before you commit to any tracker system check which ones Direct-Line approve.......... directline are the owners of one of the tracker companies IIRC so no good fitting something that they don’t approve (ie from their competitors!). What your insurer approves of and what Land Rover dealers offer are not always the same thing also many insurers not tied to their own tracker company do not require a tracker for vehicles below a set value - NFU Mutual offer good policies/ premium values and don’t always require a tracker for Land Rover products.
I have had the TrackStar5 on two previous cars - a FullFat Rr and an Evoque, not because my insurer asked for it but because there was an attempt to steal the FFRR from my drive, my more recent cars have come with the Incontrol Secure system fitted. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks for the responses.

The Direct Line Agent I spoke to said that any Cat 5 or 6 tracker would be OK.

My interest is not only to satisfy the Insurance requirement, but also the added security aspect.

I would be interested in Tim's opinion of what he thought of the Trackstar Cat 5 he had fitted on his two vehicles.

There’s not much to report - the version I had was a hidden black box with its own battery. I had no extra keys or anything like that, just relied on the central monitoring service that you pay for. The problem with all 3rd party/ after market fitted systems is that if your car is stolen then the thieves will destroy the interior trying to find the black box and its power supply. There was an interesting program about car theft on Ch5 last night where they showed a Porsche 911 that was stolen and recovered but the interior was so badly damaged it was written off..... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Ive got a cat6 Locate fitted to my now RRS & I had a cat5 plus fitted to my RRS before this one,,the only difference is you get tags with the 5 plus so if anyone takes it even with the keys it alerts tracker within seconds of it moving.
Here are a few options

Thanks again for the responses.

I don't mind installing a tracker if it genuinely improves security. However, I get Tim's point about them wrecking the interior looking for the black box. I guess the car thief either steals, or clones, the keys in the first place in order to gain entry and attempt to start the vehicle. Only then will the thief discover if there is another layer of security i.e. the Cat 5 token - Does the absence of a token prevent the vehicle from being started, or does it just notify the control centre.

Does anyone have practical experience of their vehicle being stolen and the control centre being contacted.

Does anyone have a view of whether the VHF technology of the Tracker products is a worthwhile advantage over the Trackstar products.

With a cat5 plus with the fobs,,they can still drive it but it alerts tracker straight away,,they then call you first to make sure it’s not a false alarm,,if you then tell them your not in the car so it must have been stolen they then alert police who have all the equipment to then track 5he car. Also with a cat5 plus tracker can turn the car off,,so if police are following it & it stops at lights or junction they will disable the engine & the thieves are going nowhere in it.Cat5 plus is by far the best,,if mine didn’t already have a cat6 locate fitted when I purchased it I would have fitted the 5 plus without hesitation. Also wth the 5plus & locate they can track it if it’s in underground carpark or even in a container.

Thanks Tyrefitter. Did you use the My Tracker Website facility - if so, what did you think of it.

I am interested in keeping a track log of all my journeys. I currently use the track facility on a Garmin Sat Nav and download the gpx files on a regular basis. I can then see exactly where I've been at any time on any day.
