Yes, I have. There is a reason I became an Alive dealer Wink Thumbs Up

EDIT: And I didn't say there was anything dodgy about them...

My remap done by a non-specialist tuner. It cost me £100 less than the retail price of an Alive remap. The original remap caused me no end of reliability issues, as well as costing me over £7,000 to put the car right again, in the shape of a new gearbox, transfer box, rear diff and a set of injectors...

The car was repaired, driven to Alive HQ, re-remapped by Gary, and I have not had a single issue since

It's your car, it's your money, it's your choice...

I took my 2012 model 3.0 SDV6 to Alive shortly after I got it, so about 2 years ago. It was an ECU out job, but that said it was all done as I waited, around 3 hours if I remember correctly. Turned the car into the car it always should have been, touch over 300hp now but can't remember torque difference, around 10 to 15% from memory. Have done about 30k since, currently on 80k, and no reliability issues at all, flown through the MOT's etc. Perfectly safe to do, friendly people and I wouldn't have any problem recommending any 3.0 SDV6 owner to do likewise.

The other point I would make is always use a specialist who is expert with the specific marque and ideally the specific vehicle. Alive or BAS for these motors. In a previous life I had a Saab 9000, and similar tales of woe on that forum about remap issues, but I had mine done by Abbot Racing Motorsport, specialist tuners who ran Saabs in racing teams, and again never an issue with performance or reliability (or hitting 90mph in 3rd, but that's a whole other story Smile). That was also an ECU out job, again no reliability issues at all afterwards.

Sorry for the thread drift, but I've been contemplating getting the Alive remap carried out, lucky for me DiscoMikey is close by, but I was just wandering are the before and after results noticeable, I've had a couple of normally aspirated cars mapped but to be truthful apart from removing flatspots I've not really been able to tell much of a difference. It would be good to get some first hand feedback. Thumbs Up

It makes a huge difference to the SDV6 Thumbs Up

Headline figures are 319bhp/720Nm for the 8 speed models, it generally, somewhere between 300-310bhp + 700Nm are to be expected

The bum dyno certainly notices the extra 50bhp/100Nm Mr. Green

I agree with Disco Mikey. Mine was 256 bhp stock I think. A 20 percent uplift to circa 300 plus a decent torque boost makes a big difference.

I noticed no more "roundabout roulette," that horrible lag before take off. And whereas before on a cross country fast blast (eg A702 from M74 to Edinburgh) I'd be on the flappy paddles when getting a shift on, or approaching corners, or on an overtake, post remap no need. Does it all fine in D mode or if you want the better engine breaking on fast road driving, in S mode (holds gears longer going up and shifts quicker going down, eg approaching corners).

The remap doesn't touch the gearbox parameters but the extra power and torque and responsiveness delivers in spades and makes it a much better drive. There is even a slight betterment in fuel economy if you are careful, but frankly I prefer to give it a bit of a boot now and then so don't really mind, but Birmingham to Edinburgh fast used to be 22 or 23mpg best, now can get 25.7 to mid 26 easily which is useful.

Worth the I think 500 quid and a trip to Alive. You won't regret it. The engine and gearbox are good for it and even after the remap power and torque are well within design maximum tolerances.

Definitely touches gearbox as there are torque limits in place on engine map in certain gears before the map takes place. Gary at Alive talked through this with me before mine was done Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Interesting, he didn't say that to me and I thought resetting the gearbox or reprogramming it was a separate exercise ? You live and learn on here, that's for sure. Irrespective, the main points I was making about the driving experience difference after remapping and that engine and gearbox are all well within maximum tolerances are the main thing.

I 100% agree with every part of this statement in my experience with the Alive map! And I'm now carrying a fair bit of extra weight and it still feels lively Thumbs Up 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

The PCM and TCM both talk to each other. The gearbox determines how much torque is being produced, and can alter the engine output if it deems necessary

No physical programming of the gearbox ECU takes place, but it is affected due to the Engine ECU being tuned Thumbs Up

The only thing I would add is you do need to give your car (mapped or not) a good run out reasonably frequently or the dpf can get clogged and you can end up losing performance that way or at worst a restricted performance requiring a forced regen. A remap cannot stop this. I give mine a good run once a month if not doing a Brum to Edinburgh return, once every three months a shot of diesel clean extreme (from halfords) and tend to use millers oils diesel supplement at a fill up. Maybe a bit anal but keeps everything clean and tidy. And I never, ever, miss a service, a good trusted local indy is worth their weight in gold ).
