Transfer box replacement

Good evening,

Has anyone replaced a transfer box on a Sport? Mine is a 2005 2.7 TDV6 RRS, I have a rasping noise on light throttle/coasting like a tin of ball bearings being shaken I think it’s the transfer box at fault but I just need some info on replacing the transfer box is it straight forward? Step by step guide would be great! I’m a mechanic by trade so have access to a ramp tools etc just need some guidance before I start

Thanks

Do an oil change first, it will tell you if the problem lies with the transfer box. Your issue could be something else, possibly the torque converter. Little point in shelling out for a new transfer case when a relatively cheap inspection of the oil may rule out a fault.

Hi Nige,

Yeah I have replaced the oil and the fault appears the same, the old oil was dirty but no signs of metal, this problem seems to be common on 2005 RRS with some people reporting no fix after replacing all sorts of components but also no component failures due to the noise over thousands of miles so I’m a little stuck as to where to go to be honest the noise is just more annoying than anything else and I’m sure most people wouldn’t notice it but I guess it’s the mechanic in me!

Does it make the same noise in both High and Low range ? In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Hi, a lack of metal in the oil is a good sign. Ive also seen reports on the internet about this light throttle resonance and some saying they cured it with a new torque converter. When it is happening, does it the noise disappear instantly with slight increase in throttle? There is a thread somewhere within rrsport of a similar complaint and a dealer reported it as a characteristic of the gearbox/torque converter, the noise occurring at the point when the torque converter lock up is not quite engaged.

Hi

it's only really noticeable when you are driving along and feather the throttle and with the window down , I can't get it to do it and idle or replicate it stationary, it does clear instantly when I increase or let off the throttle or with a gear change, initially I thought it was a broken bracket vibrating some where but I cant find anything, I have replaced the propshaft center bearing, alternator belt tensioner, idler and belt, carried out a full engine service and replaced the front diff and transfer box oil, I need to carry out a rear diff oil change but cant for the life of me find the fill bung, oh and I might do a gearbox oil and filter change just to tick it off the list but nothing has worked so far

Here's the guide you were looking for:
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic47890.html

Not had to do that myself thank goodness. But I have changed the rear diff oil a couple of times. IIRC the drain plug is on the bottom and the fill plug is on the rear face of the diff casing? Do you have an electronic locking diff? Maybe they are different 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

It's a gearbox related noise

Sometimes cured by a new TC, others no such luck...

Maybe a gearbox flush first then, not that its a guaranteed cure but worth a go.

Thanks for the info I wonder if its worth contacting Land Rover to see if there are any software updates available for the gearbox or engine that could help with this or I have heard that an independent ecu remap has cured similar faults but I have no proof of this, does anyone have an idea on the cost of replacing a torque converter?

Thanks

About £1200ish

A flush can help, but won't always eradicate the noise.
The noise also will come back in the future as it's a trait of the TC wearing.

If you don't get rev fluctuations then I wouldn't bother replacing the TC just yet. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible
