Yet, 55% here say they do that. Shocked

I am not seeing the benefit of dropping a huge lump of wonga down on something that will drop in value like a stone the moment you drive it out of the showroom and continue to do so. Isn't it better to use the £ for more productive things and cough up £225 a week on a lease deal? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Looking at the poll results, I'm surprised how few do leasing.

On Lings, the RRS starts at £2600 down and £890 a month, over 4 years inc road tax.

How does that compare with the costs for you folks who are not all-cash buyers?

To be honest that sounds better than paying cash,,when my14 AB was new it would have been about 82-84k & now it's worth about 44-48k so when it's 4 year old it will be worth about 40k so 42-44k loss against your £2600 down & £890 a month works out at just over 45k so no difference really if I'd have bought new in 14.
Ive got a guy pestering me to sell him mine at 48.5k tomorrow & I paid £60.844 13 month ago so if I sell tomorrow ive lost £13,344 a grand a month,,I'm thinking leasing is probably best option next time & use my cash for something else.

I only buy outright because I am a contractor and you never know if you are going to be out of work. Interest rates are no good at the moment,so it's hard work getting a decent return on your money.

I totally get it from a contractor point of view. Money pours into your bank for a few months then you might have three months of nothing. In that situation, especially with dire interest rates, I'd probably do an outright buy or a big deposit deal.

In my case, we sell online, we have seasonal fluctuations, but money pretty much drips in 365.

Last time I bought it was £15k, I could manage that. But looking at the new shape, £40k seems entry level. Thats a lot of wonga to slap down in one.

I'm not eager to drop a load of already earned money on a fast depreciating item that I could use for developing and launching new product lines. I'd rather take the lowest monthly cost into ownership route. Why I am looking at leasing.

What I am trying to work out is is dropping say £10k in readies, an £8kish PX and a low cost loan cheaper ongoing than using a leasing type of deal. Or is dropping £2600 down and £860 a month better value?

Or even maybe wait 12 months while values fall, save up a bit and buy outright. Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

My current RRS is on an LR PCP but have bought cars using bank loans and even HP (low low rate compared to the loans and PCP when I did it) and once paid on my personal Platinum Amex Card to get 55,000 points that at the end of the year I can donate to a charity via Amex - I give mine to Great Ormond Street Hospital annually. Dealer agreed to it but the trader fees for them to Amex were high....... I was buying a completely new launch car so couldn't get any discount so it cost the dealer in another way. I was surprised that they agreed to it. The interest free period gave me more time to look round for better finance deals than LR were offering too. I think the last car I paid cash for was my first car - a Ford Fiesta 1.1L bought from my Mum! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

So after some deliberation, I decided to go into a new shape for all money early next year, and here's why:

*I like to register my cars to a third party company I have for that purpose to avoid bureaucracy and nonsense (much of that nowadays).
*I use a 3rd party trade multiple vehicle insurance cover - always have - and dont want to fork out for fully comp to suit some finance company.
*I dont want to be at the mercy of some finance company at the end of a lease while we bicker over any and every scratch and detail and/or mileage charges.
*I'm old school - I like to own things.

So £35k seems entry level buying from LR with a warranty now. By early next year the pool of cars will widen at that money from what they are now. As these cars are notoriously unreliable, I think a dealer warranty is a must. At least I'll get a couple of years with someone else picking up the big bills that way.

My old one is no longer a PX, it seems to work and my wife has baggsied it .

I'd buy something else more reliable but nothing really seems to compare. I dont fancy one of those Porsche things that look like a frog, or the Audi one as it looks, well... meh.

Like an iPhone, the RRS seems to be the only thing worth considering in the niche.

So I am saving up, £5k is in the pot already after a short time, I'll find £10k from under the mattress, flog off an older car we have, and even if I use a modest general loan to help out, we'll soon be there without much pain....... Thumbs Up Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Good luck with your purchase.

But when you say “L/R warranty and some one else picking up the bills for couple of years”!!!!!
Those two comments don’t fit together very well going on some of the recent threads

I might have to start reading the warranty topics more closely now. Are they squirming out of honouring their own warranty? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Yes, I've found the topic now and replied there. Thanks.

It is making me reconsider, I like stuff that works without pain. And if it does break, a painless and fast fix. The automotive version of a Sebo vacuum or an iPhone really.

I can't say I'm overjoyed reading the crank story. What else are we all buying instead? Get a 2005-2009 RRS (FAH500210) sat nav/dash mat here - the one that wasn't there when you bought the car.

Not as big as an RRS and it will fit in my garage which no modern Land Rover does, i’ve Just placed an order for the new Mini Countryman PHEV after an extended (96 hour) test drive - quieter than my L494 in both electric and petrol modes, 60mpg on petrol, 26 miles on electric only, very comfortable seating and the suspension beats any steel sprung Land Rover hands down. I don’t carry many passengers or tons of gear in the boot but the rear seats get family approval for comfort and ease of access and the boot is quite bi enough for me. £10 a year VED, no Rich Bastard Luxury Car Tax and the batteries charge in 2.5hours from a 13 amp socket and <30 minutes on a public rapid charger, I can also recharge using my home solar array and not stop exporting to the grid on a brighter day........... That is what i’m Replacing my totally reliable 2015.5MY with in April 2018, only because LR refuses to allow their insurer to cover the crankshaft issue.......... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
