RRS 2.7 TDV6 - 143k - 2005 - HSE - FSH [FAULT CODES]

Good morning I'm new to forums and hope I'm posting in the correct location.

Long story short I bought this car about 8 weeks ago and am asking for a full refund. However, I'm curious to know if others can speak intelligently to the following fault codes and what they MIGHT point to:

5 "U" codes - communication issues (between ride level control, transfer case module, instrument cluster, invalid data from engine module & parking assist (which I now know needs attention anyway)).

P0730-00 - incorrect gear ratio (I'm presuming Torque Converter; the rev counter flicks slightly, feel the cattle grid effect between 30&40 mph which happened the day I drove it from the Trader). I kick down and can power through it.

P132B - Turbo Boost Control
P066A - Intake Manifold Pressure
P0242 - Rough Running on Cylinder 3
P0046 - Boost Pressure Solenoid Valve

I'm presuming the Turbo may be subject to impending mechanical failure. However,

I do not get an engine management warning light,
I do not think I get an appreciable loss of power delivery or response,
I have not seen any black smoke,
I cannot hear a hiss when the turbo is engaged,
I suspect there is Turbo lag,
The car drives nice before it reaches operating temp for the gearbox,
Below 30 and above 40 it appears to me to drive really well,
I can shift through the gears manually
EGR valves have been replaced

I get the "Engine System Fault" message and the "Special programs unavailable" message more often now. I lose all power at the throttle usually at higher speeds. If I switch off and on again the car drives as normal.

I'm trying to interpret these things but ultimately I have asked the dealer for a full refund.

Does anyone have any insight into these faults? I'd be grateful for it in case I have to get all legal on the guy.

Thanks

Steve Confused

The "special programmes unavailable warning - also HDC unavailable can show, is often a sign of an old / dying battery or alternator. Many warnings can be flagged up on the dash as a result of a failed brake lamp, dying battery or failing alternator.

Yours gear box may not have had any oil changes that might be causing gear change issues at the age / miles of your car and a mega flush by one of the mobile mechanics like Bodsy can transform the gearbox performance.

There is a turbo lag that is a feature of 2.7TDv6's

You say the EGR valves have been replaced, but on a 2005 you can remove them completely with a blanking kit and a software patch.

At the age of your car do you know if the timing/cam belts were changed and if the oil pump was replaced at the same time - this is a body off job (the car is designed for that and it takes a good mechanic about an hour to detach the body from the chassis/ running gear)

The guys to ask for help with fault codes are those like Mikey and Bodsy, but many members have IID fault code readers and can tell you what those codes are. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Hey Tim

Thanks for that. Yes it did cross my mind after I posted that maybe the battery and g/b oil could be at fault (at least for the comms codes). Certainly of the number of receipts I have for all the services I cannot see this has been changed. Cannot see any evidence of the alternator being changed either. Perhaps worth a shot.

At this stage I simply can't make my mind up whether to give the car back to the dealer and find another RRS. Of course I have to live with the concern about reliability. This car has had quite a lot done on it in the last 18 months which I don't have to worry about; brakes, brake hoses, suspension legs and bushes all round, wheel bearings, propshaft, 2 EGR valves,

Timing belt/oil pump not sure. But If I keep the car and the body has to come off I'd be inclined to get the alternator, cam belt, oil pump and anything else worthy of note changed at the same time.

As for the fault codes Halfords produced the report with the descriptions; I'm just not sure if the point to prospective mechanical failure of any component, particularly the turbo. (Now you mention it I did ask Halfords to put an off side rear bulb in, I think it was the brake lamp.

Thanks for your reply Tim, appreciate it.

If ever you need it read again and you're not too far from j9 m6, I have a hawkeye and can do it for you instead of going to Halfords. I also have a 2005 2.7, and there is a hesitation / lag its normal, Removing the EGR doesn't need a software patch on this year either.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Thanks Bodsey. Just to clarify; failing gearbox as opposed to failing torque converter or both? 4W in Solihull suggests the RRS gearbox is pretty robust and its likely just the TC needs changing.

Do the other "P" codes point to turbo failure do you think?

Thanks for the insight.

Thanks Squizzel. I appreciate that. I'm not far from you. I'm just not sure now whether the Turbo is about to fail. My guy gave me the option of buying the car back or giving me some money back (£900). It may be better the devil you know... get some money back do the G/B but only if the "P" code fixes don't require a Turbo...

If he refunded me (by law he has to) I would buy another RRS... but could face similar issues outside the statutory 6 month warranty period.

What to do eh... decisions.

Difficult decision, Is it worth getting it checked over by a specialist. Ultimate land rover are not too far from us they did the belts on the one I have. Not too bad with their prices. Low battery can cause a load of faults too, these cars are very sensitive to low voltage.
Good luck with it whatever you decide

Thanks for that. TBH I'm very torn...

I'm going to talk to 4W in Solihull again and see if the "P" codes indicate turbo failure (because at the moment the car pulls like a train)...

Just a thought, did the codes get cleared? and these came back. If not could they be historic, from when the work was done previously.

This is the curious thing. When the dealer agreed to meet with me at his mechanics it was because i reported the cattle grid effect (torque converter) and the loss of power. His mechanic hooked up his diagnostic machine and drove the car. When the cattle grid effect occurred he said "What's that?" He couldn't give me a diagnosis for anything. In fact he just gave me 2 bottles of fuel cleaner.

Long story short... he drove it with the diagnostic machine and came back to show me a clean sheet. (I wasn't in the car at this point).

If I'm being cynical I'd say he cleared the faults before he showed me because 2 other dealers (albeit 2 weeks later) printed off the fault codes I've reported on this forum.

So.... 4W are clear; fault codes are stored permanently (I need to check how this works). But I'm finding it hard to believe they occurred in the following 2 weeks after the Dealers mechanic checked it.

The fault codes will all have a time stamp on them so you will know when they happened.

EDIT:-

The dealership won't clear any faults for you unless you ask them to, also when the mechanic was riding along with you he was looking for active/current faults popping up.

That helpful to know thank you.

The report I had didn't have dates but I'm taking it to a specialist on Friday who is going to go through it for me and drive the car.

Active current faults... that's interesting, So he wouldn't see historical ones at that point.

He will have checked for previous faults to give him an idea what he was looking for. But I would've thought he was more interested in live values.

His mechanic? You not present? Yeah, sounds like a stitch up to me.

How long have you had the car? I'd be thinking of handing it back for a refund if it's a recent purchase. This dealer is going to deny any issues you raise and you'll be left with an expensive heap. Move on. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
