Engine failure

While driving in German Autobahn around 100 mph, for around 2 minutes (for first time of its life), engine got lumpy and gear got to neutral. I managed to get it to nearby exit and after 3 hours car got transported to nearby LR dealer. They had a quick look and removed the oil filter and found it to be full of metal particle. So basically engine is dead just after 24000 miles, and LR is going to repatriate the car to my local dealer. We are flying home tomorrow, cutting our holiday short as there's no point in trying to carry as normal.
Its going to be a while before I get my car back, but however you look, its pretty poor for engine to fail so early.

I'm so sorry to hear that it must have really cheesed you off to call your holiday short for a questionable land rover product!!

My dad had an xjr similar miles cruising to bristol from London and engine died, jaguar insisted misfueling until proven otherwise, eventually jaguar replaced engine, but after that he sold it he couldn't enjoy it after that, my point being don't let them try to pass the blame onto you no matter what tactics they employ on you.

Wales 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra Black

Very bad and sad news, and a shame you felt you had to cut short your holiday. It's one of the first years of the Mk2 model, mileage doesn't always come into the equation.
You may have to pay a % towards repair (depends on reason for failure) had a turbo failure causing similar (not RRS), unless on a LR warranty. Has LR indicated anything or supplying loan vehicle through local dealer?
Obviously please keep us informed, and hope they pay out for you.

EDIT: I read your model from profile as 2013 so my comments were re that, not model you now state you have, sorry. Embarassed John

Thanks Alex, more then anything I am disappointed of loosing the trust, and like your father, that I may not enjoy it anymore. I had freelander 2 for 6 years and no problems, but then paid 3 rimes as much and this failing under 2 years. I have only delt with the European LR team who are arranging everything, but lets see what LRUK response would be when I return.

So what engine, what year model, good to know this stuff. Why doesn't the Mod require this stuff when we join? M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

You are indeed unlucky.

In reality, anything man-made can break, and a small percentage will fail prematurely.

Hope yours gets fixed without fuss and you bond with it again. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I know it is pants, but hopefully you will get a 2 year old car back with a brand new, uprated version of the same engine. JLR and all manufacturers evolve their components as their understanding of the units / failures / etc happen during a life cycle of the product.

Get a full report on the failure. Ensure they do not just replace the short block and reuse your auxiliaries, I had this on my 911 that let go. If the engine has failed you want anything that could have been affected to be replaced.

I would be asking for an extension on your warranty too as compo for your holiday being cut short. 2016 RRS Autobiography - 4.4 TDV8 - Santorini Black with Ivory Leather - Grey Alloys - A few toys

If metal filings have gone through the motor you need a full replacement engine. I had this happen on a Saab they replaced the block and had to do the job twice as metal was in turbo and ended up through the motor again. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Thanks everyone,
Got home now, I must say the European arm of the LR breakdown service looked after us well, and sorted the hire car and flights and said that all other costs would be paid as well. Wilf had highlighted a very good point, I will make cure to point this out to the dealer.
Also the German dealer suggested that I take lots of photos of the car so that any damages during the transport can be raised, which I did.
Now I need to get a loan car sorted until mine is fixed and hopefully get a good engine this time.

Udash,

succes. I went to the whole process as well, but was lucky enough to had the engine replaced under warranty/courtesy by JLR.
What oil where you using? It seems that the right oil spec is a critical factor RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux

Its serviced by the LR dealer, last time I asked they said they use Shell.
Another issue is that without the dip stick, its impossible to even get any idea of the quality of the oil or its colour during the year. I checked the oil level each day of the trip as I was doing longer distances and it stayed at the top mark doing the whole journey.

Shell is no problem. But oil specs are important. They should have used Shell Helix Ultra Professional 5W30 AF-L (A so called C1 oil). RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux
