AV system forgets place in Aux media / USB stick

I like to listen to talking books in the car. Recently I have been downloading them to a USB stick which I then insert in the slot in the fridge. All works a treat, but ....

About 70% of the time when you restart the car the systems sends you back to the beginning of the track/chapter. as these can be up to 20 minutes long this takes a lot of fast forwarding / rewinding to get back to the right place.

To make matters worse the FF/RW buttons on both the steering wheel and the dashboard don't work that well. It's like there is a duff connection, except the problem is the same in both directions and whichever switch I use. Rewinding through 10 minutes of track can take about two minutes or more.

All downloadd books seem to have the same problem.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried any of the other inputs on vehicle? (For better control of FF and FR etc)

Other choices copy/download onto iPhone or any smartphone, and play back via that, or copy to CD disc and replay using CD/DVD player. Playback from either type above would always restart where you last left it.

Playback using other inputs rewinds and FFs OK.

Can't copy the talking book yo an iPhone as there is no cable to connect iPhone to RRS, only old style 32 pin connector. Not sure if one is available, but even if there is I suspect it would be a pain having to always remember to start/stop the iPhone playback when leaving the car.

Can't copy to CD as the talking books are usually about 11 CDs long.

Playback via USB is meant to restart in the same place AFAIK. It does a lot of the time anyway.
