another thing today messing with the IID tool it seems now to take a while for the evaporator to drop and only drops to about 8 degrees but my inside cabin was 23 degrees when it clearly was not it was a lot cooler than that these cars are weird it seems to do something different every day Big Cry

If the internal temperature is reading a little bit high, this would load the air conditioning to stay on for longer so not really an issue for the moment. If it's reading low then the air con would cycle off before true cabin temperature is achieved.
The air conditioning in cars isn't like many commercial air conditioners in buildings where they reduce duty the closer to set point, it's either on or off with the condenser fan/air across the condenser with vehicle speed and engine speed the only variables.
The evaporator temperature being at 8 Celsius is ok and to be expected after say 5 minutes of running with a warm cabin, but I would expect it to drop to around 0-2 Celsius as cabin temp comes down, certainly within 10 minutes if everything is working as it should.
If your evap temp is not going down below 8 celcuis after 10 minutes you either have a slightly low refrigerant charge or a worn and inefficient compressor.
I don't know if you can do this, but can you record values for system pressure, evap temperature, compressor load amps and cabin temperature and then go for a 10 minute drive with the ac set as cold as possible, then post the results on here?

Right here we go then
System pressure. Before 475kpa After 774 Kpa
Compressor Before 139 a. After 242a
Evaporate. Before 14.5. After. 14 But did drop after sitting to 5.5
Interior temp set to 16 degrees but showing 21
Anything else thank can help with this I would be grateful as I can smell the air con when I turn it on and it feels cold but in my Disco3 I could not sit in it at 16 degrees as it was too cold but in my sport i can stand it at that temp so it's defiantly mot working correctly
Thanks
Geoff

Yep, still the same conclusion, either slightly low on refrigerant or the compressor is worn
I'm afraid the only way to determine the charge is to have it reclaimed and weighed. If the charge is correct (~600g) then the compressor is the likely issue. Compressors can be tested usually by something called a pump down test, whereby they are forced to pull a vacuum and hold it to confirm serviceability. You cant do this with a automotive system so the only way to check its current state will be with a manifold gauge and a thermodynamic table for r134a

It's off to the air con engineer sadly, choose your guy(or gal to be PC) wisely Geoff Thumbs Up

I will empty the system first i think and see how much is in there with my mates machine at least then i should be able to eliminate either low refrigerant or faulty compressor thanks for all the advice Thumbs Up

Well an update down to garage today and took out 220 grams so a leak is there ,So off with the front end of the car (what a bitch compared to a disco 3 with those extra rads) so got it off and wtf half the rad is missing cant believe it was holding any pressure so replaced and refilled pressure up around the 10 bar mark and evap temp down quickly to 3.5 so thanks for the help everyone and here's hopping Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up The cost of a new condenser etc is a bit of a blow but cheaper than a compressor. Glad you're sorted

Just thought i'd put an update on my Aircon issues, beware long story.
I waited a while for the better air con man to come and he therefore found a leak that no-one else could in the condenser, although id been told before that there was no leaks once he'd replaced the condenser there was a massive green corrosive stain around one of the bottom corners.
But this didn't love my issues as once he regassed it the system still didn't work and was not trying to work. So upon closer inspection of the compressor the front had snapped off where the insides had seized, another two week wait for this to be changed and he found out that he couldn't change it on the drive so another two week wait whilst he talked a mate in to using he's garage.
And yesterday the compressor was changed (it took two mechanics all day). but its now working perfectly thank god for that, as its been a nightmare and a very costly experience.
It was worth the wait for the better more experienced air con man as its now working and no-one else could diagnose a fault but why do land rover make these systems so complex? he said he'd rather work on aston martins than another sport!
Sorry for the rambling but now the warm weather over i have aircon ready for next year. Tesla model 3 long range

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 Autobiography Alaska White

Read this complete thread and learned a great deal.

My2010 Sport TDV8

My issue is quite strange. AC stops getting cold when engine idle. If the revs are up to 1200 to 1500 and above the air becomes cold quite quickly. I have no DTCs stored and the gas has been extracted and reloaded after a vacuum test done and LR main dealer.

The evaporator temp is lowered to 1 celsius quite quickly when revs are 1500 as described but as soon as the idle settles it rises to 14 celsius rasing to 17 or 18. Vent air gets warm and I become sad.

I should also add that the compressor is very noisy. The car has been owned from new and has only 43K on the clock.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. SVR On My Wish-List

I think you've pretty much solved your own problem here John, the compressor is dying as it can't efficiently compress the refrigerant at low speed. Given that its noisy as well confirms it is on it's last legs.
Inside an automotive compressor are a series of small pistons which act on an angled swash plate. At the head of each piston is a spring steel valve which closes on suction and opens on compression. My guess is, one or more of these valves is broken.

Budget for a new compressor and in the meantime, don't use the air con. If the compressor should seize, you risk throwing the belt and losing power steering plus drive for the water pump/viscous fan is off the same belt too.

This video shows the internals and you can see the action of the valves opening and closing
