Slight loss of coolant

Having a slight problem, but can't see any leaks.

Over the length of the week, the coolant overflow bottle (the right hand side of it where you fill the coolant up) drops by around 30-50%

I can't see any leaks on the drive or in the engine bay.

Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks Just bought a RRS 06 MY HSE TDV6 136,000 miles, to be a second car to my bland, boring Mitsubishi Outlander 68 plate 2.0 petrol 4

Check your oil filler for signs of a cream coloured residue which could indicate coolant is getting into the oil.

Maybe water outlet connection #1357091 (known thing) located in the middle of block, bellow intake "Y" connection. I had mine replaced after finding that coolant level was going down slowly with no visible leakage. In my case one of rubber O-rings was problem but I put new part on place to keep peace of mind.

Warkman,

My isssue was somewhat similar. I never really check my fluids but 2 months ago without any suspicions I had a look at my coolant level and noticed that it was below minimum. I filled it up and have been keeping an eye on it since. So far no real change but I'll continue watching it closely with all these +30 heat warnings we are getting. Has your coolant level dramatically dropped since you filled it back up?

Either buy a pressure tester or have a garage pressure test it for you. That should at least reveal if you have a leak or not.

If however, the cause is a faulty expansion tank pressure cap (not unknown) the pressure test will not show this up since the test equipment replaces the cap.

It is cheap and easy to try replacing the pressure cap. The cap is rated at 110 kPa (1.1 bar) (16 lbf/inĀ²). 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

When I was searching for possible problem I found links bellow:

http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showth...t-assembly

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic97336.html

My housing was not cracked but one rubber O-ring was almost like plastic and that's where I had a leakage. Hard to notice until you remove intake Y-conenction (you can find photos on first link)

Since I had new part I just replace it with new sealing rings.

Thanks Dalmat,

I don't know how likely it is for my housing to crack because we get relatively cool temps 9 months out of the year. The links you referred me to dicuss this failure as normal for the LR's that reside in warm and hot climates. Hopefully the 9 month break here in Canada is enough not to crack the housing but I will definitely check it out.

GREAT READ!!!! Thumbs Up

CAN
We have moderate climate over here, some high temperatures during summer, so that is also not extreme like in that article. But, plastic is loosing flexibility with a time, rubber too. Housing on my car was in good condition but seals were hardened and one of them was a cause of small leakage. That smal amount of coolant vaporized during engine operation and it was hard to trace it in my case. It was much easier to see that after intake Y piece removal.

Very True,

I'm just hoping it isn't my housing lol... I'll see if there's some way I can check it. the 5.0 SC Petrol engines are VERY tight so not a lot of visibility below the surface components.

thanks again Smile
