Hi Tom0311,
30mpg???? You can wave goodbye to that if you get the 4.2SC!!! Although to be fair it's ok on motorway runs economy wise but short runs in town is shocking!
As for the power, I love it! For such a big beast the supercharger just keeps sucking in more and more air and the car just keeps going faster and faster and faster!!!!
It's even more mental in Sport mode which increases the normally smooth gear change from about 2.5k revs to about 7k!!!!!!! Insanely fun and a lot of people still haven't worked out these things can really shift as I leave them embarrassed at the lights.
Hope you get one, you won't regret it (so long as it it's reliable).
Have fun!!!! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

Sounds like fun. I won't be after good MPG if I switch so that's fine. I'm sold on range rovers and if my job relocates I can get the one I wanted in the first place.

Is here much lag from the automatic gearbox? The 2.7 has a lot of delay when you put your foot down from stationary. Wondering if that's purely the auto gearbox.

Hi Tom0311,

This is the first RR i have owned so I don't think it's fair to compare it to my previous cars (MK2 MR2 Turbo and Audi A4 Cabriolet) but I certainly haven't noticed any lag from the gearbox, maybe it is a diesel thing? Or the fact that 4.2L Supercharged doesn't notice 2.5 tonnes of beef! I'm sure others can confirm or deny?
I'm not sure if they all have this but as well as full auto, mine has Sport mode and "manual" mode where you can select the gears yourself although i haven't actually used this in the 6 months I've had it so that tells you that I'm not noticing any lag.

I would be interested to hear what others say?

I'm the same as you, sold on RR's now and can't imagine driving anything else.

You won't regret it and you'll be smiling every time you get in it!! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

Ah yes command shift - I have to use that on certain roundabouts otherwise I'll never make a gap! Maybe it's a combo of the 2.7 diesel and the gearbox. The 2.7 is pretty notorious for the lag.

Sorry for all the questions, but how does the 4.2 sound? I've heard it's not the most v8-sounding car but the supercharger whine is prominent? I've looked on youtube for 1st generation 4.2's where you can get a good idea of the engine noise but haven't found any yet.

Once I've had the diesel serviced next week I'll be on the hunt.

That's what it's called! Command Shift, i thought that was for computers!

I think you are right, it's probably the 2.7 diesel and gearbox combo as you say.

Don't worry about the questions, glad to help. I'm new here and although I can't help with technical questions (yet) happy to contribute to this great community in any way I can.

As for the sound, when I first got it I loved the V8 burble (but again, probably comparing with the V6 3L Audi) but now I would like a bit more of an announcement! I have been looking at custom exhaust systems and may go down this route at some point but no rush.

When we picked the car up my mate pointed out the supercharger noise (i had never heard one before) but if i'm honest, I barely notice it now inside the serene cabin. It's probably louder outside though!

What I do love is the fact that the supercharger just goes on and on and on, shooting you forwards like you are in a catapult with no sign of running out of steam!! Definitely a lot of fun and a little bit scary!!!! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

Thanks Smile I've had plenty of fast turbocharged cars but never a supercharged car, so I'm looking forward to trying one out. How many miles did you buy yours at? My diesel is up to 105,000 now and still going strong, so I'm probably not going to be fussy when I look for an SC provided it's got a good history.

Hope it serves you well Smile

Couldn't agree with you more Tom0311.

Mine had 109k when i bought it in September with full service history (part main dealer and part Land Rover specialist) and now is up to 112k. Due for a service in April.

I did take it to my local indy (who specialise in RR) for a free health check and all they found was break fluid was dirty so pressure bled and changed that and coolant level was low so again, pressure tested and replaced but no leaks found.

Also they said rear pads were 50% worn but I've noticed the brake discs are lipped so i have bought a new set all round of Brembo discs and pads and will fit when I can actually feel they are worn (at the moment work perfectly).

I have heard that is something you will have to get used to owning one of these, replacing pads and discs regularly!!!! no doubt you will be using the power a bit more than the 2.7 and that will work your brakes!

I also was concerned about corrosion underneath and after a bit of research i got it Dinitrol treated (was going to do myself but heard that it's pig of a job and i don't have access to a ramp or pit. It was definitely worth paying someone to do!)

Drives like a new car and the interior looks brand new (I do have a sneaky feeling that this was replaced but that's ok with me).

The bodywork was immaculate apart from one tiny stone chip in the paint above the windscreen which i've sorted and the engine is just incredible.

From what you said about roundabouts in the 2.7, you will be amazed by this thing, it really does not feel like a heavy car at all.

Finally, I think if i had signed up to this site before buying mine i might have been scared off!!!! But I understand it is a labour of love that hopefully will last a long long time! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

I'm so glad I picked the SC over the diesel! I can't believe how fast it is when you put your foot down, yet how smooth and luxurious it is just cruising round. 2006 Java Black HST Supercharged

Do you find the standard exhaust to be disappointingly quiet?
I was so disappointed by it, I got a couple of the boxes removed! Much better now Thumbs Up 2006 Java Black HST Supercharged

Hi tomTerrain,
Yes, I too am a bit disappointed with the lack of V8 sound.
When you say you got a couple of the boxes removed, what did that involve exac
I would like a bit more sound but worried about affecting the MOT, emissions etc.

There are two back boxes, and two mid boxes. I had the rear most mid box, and both back boxes removed, and a stainless straight through made up. I'll get a couple of pics if I'm back before it goes dark tomorrow!
The sound is incredible now, sounds really v8 like on idle, and a lovely sound when accelerating hard. Normal cruising, it's just as silent as it was.
Going to a high rpm, and letting off the accelerator gives a nice crackle and popping too! 2006 Java Black HST Supercharged

Oooooh that sounds just what I'm looking for!
Would be good to see some pics.
Can I ask, did you use a specialist exhaust place and does it affect your MOT?
Would love to get this done as it seems much cheaper than a Quicksilver or equivalent but I'm worried it affects the MOT or engine breathing? 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

Yeah, went to a local powerflow shop who sorted it for me. I actually had a great excuse as the back box section had rusted and fallen out! Originally we were only going to do the back boxes, but it wasn't really loud enough. With the mid box gon as well,it's perfect!
The MOT guys didn't say anything about it, so I guess it's okay!
I have a HST (don't judge Whistle ) and I got them just to weld the original tips back on, so the exhaust looks unchanged without getting underneath the car. 2006 Java Black HST Supercharged

So here's the original tips minus the back box:

Straight through to the mid box:

The flange where the rearmost mid box (think it's called the muffler) has been cut out:
