New tyres needed looking for a recommendation

Hi All,

I need to replace one of for 275/40/20's so was looking at getting a set of 275/45/20 does it make much deference to the ride?and are they any that you would recommend?

Hi Lee I had 275/40/20 for years then swapped to 275/45/20 Cooper Zeons for offroad capability. They were great but now out of production so I'm on General Grabber AT3 for same off road needs. Much better ride than 40 profile too. There are road biased ones in that profile too from plenty of manufacturers. I will never go back. £160 a tyre fitted for GG AT3 Thumbs Up

Hankook's seem to be the preferred choice by a lot of members.

The "45" tyres will give a softer more comfortable ride, much better IMHO and the wife's with a bad back.

Mid price the General Grabber GT is an very good road tyre, rated by people that have used them around £120+ inc fitting etc.

All season tyre nothing beats the Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season tyre, but only good up to 149mph. RRP £440 each nut currently available from £175. each.

High Quality major brands, your main choice really is only from major manufacturers.
I like the Dunlop SP QuattroMaxx tyres. Dry quiet on road noise at a very low 68db, come with good rim protection, and the label (although tyres cannot be judged just on these EU figures) show A for wet grip and C for fuel economy. I really like these tyres and paid about SSP £327 each but available at £235 each when purchasing 4. Great performance tyre, which surprisingly for a Summer tyre, has very good grip in snow. DEX rating and public feedback rates 4.5/5.0. Smile John

From what I'm reading Toyo Proxes ST, are getting good reviews. just remember to make sure you get the correct load weight, it's not just about speed rating with these big heavy motors. I nearly bought a set of hankooks, until I noticed the load rating for my size only goes up to 102. I think minimum is 106 but I may stand corrected.

I got mine from "my tyres" by post. They are 110 load and XL with free P&P. I paid £12.50 per tyre for fitment, balance etc, but you can purchase them inc fitment, and have them installed by voucher at a tyre fitters near you. Latest link and information: http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?...p=R-291599

These tyres can also be used off road 15% but mainly for on road use 85%. I got them for mainly Winter use, but will leave on now.
They are excellent in my opinion, and a great price for main manufacturer tyres with rim protection etc. Technically a modification, but my Insurance company didn't charge any premium, mentioned as long as they covered top speed of car, some say + 5-10%,why that % I've no idea. But most RRS 3.0 are 135mph top speed standard. John

Hello Lee
I spent a small fortune on tyres for my old sc. The hankook are definitely one of the best for the RRS. Quite a few of the tyres are to soft, the outer edges prematurely wear, like my vredestein wintracs. Were very good, but to soft and wore uneven. (£250 a corner). The standard size hankook are only 115 each from click on tyres while 45's are 133 each. MY12 RRS HSE

Hi - New to this site having just got my RRS.

I will be replacing all tyres soon and in addition to the useful posts above I'd value your thoughts and experiences.

I need 275/40/R20s. Must be "all terrain". I will be driving from UK to Portugal a few times between now and this time next year when I'll be staying there for good.

So in summary: tyres needed for all types of road in all weathers and hard wearing. Not a lot of off-road driving but some track 'roads' over in Portugal. (More uneven surfaces than mud/snow.)

I'd really value your advice - if you can be precise as opposed to just brand names even better!

Thanks in anticipation...

If you don't need winter type ability but need "track" level off road ability then stick with Pirelli Scorpion https://www.camskill.co.uk/m77b0s262p10161...se%3A_72dB
If you need winter use too then you might be looking at the General Grabber AT3. Not much choice in 275/40/20 AT tyres.

If you move to 275/45/20 then the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season would be a good all round choice.

Or do the sensible thing, change to 19in rims and fit the Scorpion ATR in 255/55/19. Tough, hard wearing and a good all round AT. This would be my choice. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I have similar requirements to yourself with the addition of the need for winter tyres given our location. I have quite an extensive, unmade road to negotiate to gain access to my property, which gets rutted and extremely muddy during the winter despite being graded every year.

I have found the Pirelli Scorpion Verde to be an excellent all round tyre and should suit your requirements admirably.
