Am I being Paranoid??

Hi guys,

I maybe over thinking this......So this afternoon I fitted a side step to just one side of my 2005 RRS because I ran out of time....and energy. I had to remove the rear wheel to access the 2 little screws within the wheel arch. Once I had fitted everything, put the wheel back and removed the jack I feel like the side I put the side step on is resting 12mm lower than the other side. I say 12 mm as I measured the distance between the wheel arch and wheel and there is a 12mm difference between either side.

I started the car, backed it up my drive and parked it hoping to see it level itself out again but it didn't within the 5 mins after I turned it off.

There are no warning lights on or anything like that.

I feel it has something to do with when I jacked it up but is that me being paranoid???

Starting the engine and pressing the suspension up <wait> then down to normal should sort it out.

or maybe the suspension needs a service. (valve seals & compressor)

You should always raise the car to off-road height before jacking it up, I think it says that in the manual......... Reset as AndyK says should sort it out. Always be very careful when jacking the car up - if you use the OEM one from the boot be exceptionally careful as they are not up to the job and have been known to topple and when using a trolley jack be very careful positioning it on the sills as the compressor and airlines to the suspension are easily damaged and are close by. NEVER get under an RRS that is jacked up to off-road height without a jack, always put axles stands under it before you wriggle under as they can also loose the air from the suspension and lower the car onto you............ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

When I jack a d3/sport on a 2 poster always jack on the chassis after setting to off road height, using a beam jack again off-road height then front jack on chassis rails in line with the drive shafts, at the rear chassis rail or under lower sus arms. If your lifting an individual wheel then jack again under sus arm close to the wheel, never had a problem, might need to reset the sus height switch though. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Haven't checked the paper manual in the car, but the online one doesn't mention anything about changing ride height during a wheel change. Neutral

I've changed hundreds of wheels on RangeRover & RRS & never put suspension in off road setting & ive never had problems with them.

Sorted!! So fitting side steps isn't a job I want to do ever again! The jack supplied with my RRS is absolutely useless, the threads have stripped meaning it can't do the sole job it's intended to do. I had to go out and borrow a large "pump handle jack". Just to follow what some of you guys said I put the car into off Road height before I placed the jack onto the chassis arm where the OEM jack should be placed. I had to take the rear wheels off just to access 2 screws to remove the cill. Of course the 2 screws were seized meaning it took a good 20 mins to get them out. Then the hassle of trying to fit the side step brackets, all the bolts to fit on the underside of the bracket were a nightmare to get in. Rusted holes meant trying to clean them all out first with wire wool and then soaking them in grease. I still had to use brute force with my spanner to get them in! Anyway eventually I got the side steps on and they look great!

Powerful UK have a YouTube vid that states it takes around 20mins per side......well if you have to take the wheels off and every screw and bolt is seized up it takes a hell of a lot longer! Haha. It looks great though.

Oh and the suspension is back level again, just had to raise it and lower it a couple of times and it's all sorted.

My old gentleman 2005 RRS is now looking great!

Don't generally use off-road height when jacking here either; what I do do for servicing is lower it onto the jack so it goes up to super extended height.

The OE jack is indeed a deathtrap - ditch it and substitute it with a decent bottle jack, and a trolley jack for maintenance. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I've got a pair of these sat in the garage waiting for a day when it's not raining.
There's a big chance I might need you to answer some questions when I get stuck half way through. Did you have much trouble taking off the plastic sill protectors that run the full length of the car, broken clips etc?

I'm hoping get those screws in the wheel arch out without removing the wheel, using a very stubby screw driver, but by the sounds of it I should be getting some penetrating spray on everything asap.

When I've fitted steps I use a screw driver bit that sit in a screw driver handle & just hold it with a pair of grips.
These are the ones & hold it with grips or pliers,saves taking wheels off

Thanks, that's what I did when I fitted the mud flaps. So long as you can get some inward pressure on it, something wedged between the tyre and the driver, it's doable.

I might just warm it up too (holding a biggish soldering iron on the screw head) , cold plastic seems to grip a screw tighter than rust. I'm not a fan of all the plastic on this RRS, sort of missing my P38 which is sadly off to the land of spare parts if anyone wants her.

I did both sides on mine last week in just over an hour,didn't have to take the wheels of ,I just used a small ratchet screw driver and I would recommend getting hold of an 8mm tap to run through the holes first,it's just a case of tools for the job Thumbs Up
