thats the unfortunate thing of the vehicles we drive - it doesn't have good resale value.

not that it is limited to landrover only - friend of mine only got R130k for his 2008 touareg 3.0 tdv6

is it yours thats advertised for R400k on 4x4community - hope you get your price for your car.

Look, I am all for the dealers making profits, but this is just plain ridiculous.

I bought the D4 for 440k, then a year later they offer me 330k - that's a loss of 25% of the vehicle's purchase price!

Meanwhile, similar D4s are selling for R420k on their showroom floors, so basically they would be making a profit of almost 90k without even having to fix anything on the vehicle.

IMHO, this is why people dislike used car salespeople Evil or Very Mad --

im in a similar situation - thinking of getting my wife a newer car (currently driving 2007 D3 vCool but when you see what dealers offer on trade in Big Cry

thinking of rather keeping the D3 for my sons then get wife something like the Evoque or so - at least then I still have 2 decent tow vehicles

hi guys, I wanted to get your input on this 2012 RRS SCV8 I drove this morning.

After a quick, spirited drive, I parked the car and was looking at some live values on my IID, and the engine was making some 'ping' sounds - is that normal/not?

Also, at idle, the engine rumble/vibrations in the cabin seems to be a lot more than I feel in my D4 diesel, does that indicate an issue or is this normal on the SCV8?

Thanks for any feedback! Thumbs Up --

"Ticking" or "pinging" (more or less exhaust piping contracting after it had been heated during the drive) is normal, you might have not noticed it in with a diesel Disco, since diesel fumes are significantly cooler.

The engine itself is absolutely great, but it also has a history of failures due to extremely low-cost parts installed in the timing chain area (mainly chain slides and some engine-specific nylon pins, IIRC). There are TSBs for this and it is a known weak point of the 5.0 SC engine, as it can become catastrophic if neglected. Easy to spot when engine is running at idle, just walk up to the front of the car and listen for ticking - if you can hear it, it's a loose timing chain slamming against the slider. Once the slack in the chain is big enough, the chain will eventually skip a couple of teeth and the engine will look like a grenade has been detonated inside of it. Hopefully they've taken care of it while dealing with the head gasket.

Otherwise it's as perfect a RRS as it can get. And I was even able to travel 500 kilometers on a single tank in a one! Regards etc.,

Wojtek

Sorry Wotjek, I should have mentioned that this is not the same vehicle I mentioned in my previous post.

This is a 2012 with 77,000km, one lady owner and in pristine condition.

I checked the flappy paddles, low range, terrain response, adaptive cruise control, hard braking, etc., and it all works.

I even ran a scan using my IID and the faults recorded were minor, probably due to the car standing with a low battery.

so it looks all good, but I probably should get my trusted mechanic to go have a look. --

this is the vehicle in question, I think the price is a bit high and I'm negotiating it down to R500k.

I don't think that price is too bad, I have recently purchased a late 2011 5.0 SC with 60 k on the clock for 539 000.
Great looking vehicle although the gumtree ad has the torque figure wrong....

Hi Naks, consumption as follows,
Open road down to Durbs 11 - 11.5 l/100 at 130 KPH, back up to JHB 13 l/100, around town civilised driving can get me 16l/100. However that rarely happens , the power is addictive , usually around 19l/100. (I love embarrassing the Gti brigade away from the lights.... Twisted Evil

My mate has just sold his 2012 SC Autobiography. Beautiful car never an issue. It has HDD Nav which mapping is upgraded with DVD disc loaded into the stereo. You buy the disc which comes with access code. At least that is how its done in Aus. But you can buy a complete nav unit cheaper than disc or use google maps so why bother? SWMBO owns this car I get to drive occasionally Smile
