Noise from Pillar

Has anyone else had a noise coming from inside this pillar ?

No amount of fiddling with it on the outside will make it stop !

Well that all depends on your interpretation of the word "noise". Is it a squeak, rumble, knock, continuous or intermittent ?

I recently had a ticking sound from this area and discovered it was actually coming from outside after heat expansion being in direct sun. And found a fix for it. Happy to help if you have the same one. MY 14.5 SE SDV6 Loire Blue. Silver roof. 22's.

Yes, I have a "noise " coming from there also. The car is in with the dealership now. It's like a very light metallic tapping sound but not continuous, intermittent and very distracting as its right by the side of your right ear as your driving.
But, the car is also in for brake squeal, rear compartment rattle, Sat Nav traffic warning not working. I've managed to do a 1000 miles with the car from new, delivery was April 30th 2016 and I would say a lot of that has been done back and forth to the dealership and them test driving!!!!! The dealer won't find the fault. I have the fix. It bugged me so much I stripped everything down and found it. Let me know how you get on with the stealer and if you need help. MY 14.5 SE SDV6 Loire Blue. Silver roof. 22's.

AJ1, I would appreciate if you could just let us know how you got rid of this in case, as you say, the dealer won't be able to find it..... Every little helps.

The problem lies with the outer black door pillar skin. It expands in the heat and contracts as it cools thus creating a ticking sound. Annoyingly right next to your ear.

Once the offending part has been identified, it's a simple fix.

I inserted two wooden meat skewers straight down the tiny gap. Gently tap them home with a hammer until they're fully inserted. You'll need to pull away the rubber from the top corner of the door, then pop it back in once the skewers are all the way down.

I know it sounds a little rough, but it works ! (Photos attached)

You could use anything of similar dimensions if you don't have what I used.

Good look.

Andy, just got my car back from dealership and your fix did not sort the noise out Crying or Very sad BUT the dealership put a technical request into LR and the resultant work has now sorted out the noise.
LR technical advised lubricating the inside of the pillar with a spray lubrication Question And after an extensive test drive by myself and the dealership representative there is now NO noise Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
I have been told that a small number have been advised to do this and none have come back with the noise returned.
Now I can start to enjoy driving my car without the annoying tapping noise by my right ear.

Thanks for all your help though Bow down Bow down and hopefully this may help others who have a similar problem and if your fix does not help then this will. Very Happy

You're welcome Lyonhead.

As I said, once the offending part has been identified, it really is a simple fix.

My meat skewers worked for me, but I'm sure someone will come up with an alternative, however don't hold your breath with that wd40 the main stealer has squirted down there..... It's gotta run out somewhere, no doubt all over your lower door skin and the noise returns.

In the meantime, enjoy it while you can.

Was this a kind of creaking noise that seemed to come with body flex (not necessarily bumpy roads giving a rattle) ...and worse on warmer days??

I have a noise that seems to be coming from across the passenger side somewhere ...dealer couldn't replicate (shock!) but continued to remove the air vent to lubricate plastic parts anyway (and in doing so managed to leave the dash panel unclipped)

Needless to say even after fixing the dash it's still there and is noticeably worse on warmer days ...kinda thankful we're heading into the colder months because of it Rolling Eyes

Not really Scott, more so a "ticking" whether the car was moving or not. However you're correct with warmer days which tells me it's 100% expansion. Also mine was on the drivers side (could still be the same part).

I doubt the dealer can identify it if you can't. As I've previously stated - once the offending part I'd found, it's a simple fix. Only hours of tedious listening will reveal its cause, most definitely a job for the owner unfortunately.

Good luck,

Andy. MY 14.5 SE SDV6 Loire Blue. Silver roof. 22's.

We had a rattle noise coming from both side by the upper front seat belt mounting. This was supposed to be fixed during last years service however, the rattle returned. Dealer (Farnell Guiseley) told me that LR had issued a new part which fixes the problem. This was ordered and fitted and the rattle has been fixed. Current:
