TOWING ISSUES

I have some minor towing issues with my RRS s/c. Not that it won't tow my 1500kg poptop but not nearly as well as my other SUV a Ford Territory Turbo. Surprised
Its not that the RRS is sluggish in comparsion it just does not handle as well. Both will tow my van at 130kph + Wink but the RRS/van combination feels 'sloppy' from 60kph upwards. Never to the point of swaying but you know the van is there and moving somewhat(mainly up & down). With the Territory/Van combination you would have to look in the rear veiw mirror to make sure its still there.
Comparing the two:
Both made by Ford . Both run 6spd ZF gearboxes. Both have lots of Grunt (pulling power). Both have 20" wheels and tyres. Both handle very well in all conditions.
Both tow balls 15" from the ground when empty.
The only differences I can see are:
RRS- Hayman Reece square heavy duty hitch and tow bar.(there is some movement in this setup). Territory- fixed std 1600kg towbar and tongue. (no movement).
RRS- Air suspension Territory -Heavy duty coils.
Maybe the distance from the Tow ball to the SUV rear axles are different Question
Have any of you had a similar issue and if so is their a cure to make the ride feel more stable Question

P.S. I havn't put this on the main forum because their towing hitches and vans are very different.

I have some pitching which I put down to the air suspension and its suppleness but it is not really an issue.

If you had a WDH on the Territory that would be a possible answer but as you don't mention one so I have assumed you are not using one.

Assuming no issues with the RRS suspension, I would just put it down to the different characteristics of the vehicles and their suspension.

Mine is certainly not an issues towing my Jayco camper. While the camper might be smaller than your pop top - not how far back the camper axle is - I will have a far higher ball weight than your pop top.

Thanks for the reply Garry.
Your right I don't have a WDH on the Territory - I never needed one , never even looked like it , it just tows so well.
Yes, with the RRS I think pitching is the problem more so than any swaying . Most likely because of the AIr suspension.
Question Do you run at Normal or high height.
Don't know whether your ball weight would be higher as my Jayco Poptop is only single axle with lots of extra weight.
Looking at your photo your van wheels are set back , not in the middle of the camper.
Anyway I wonder if there is a way of stiffing mine up as its not good on a long trip Question

My ball weight is 200kg as everything including the water tank and batteries are forward of the axle.

As I said mine does have the pitch but not such a big issue and i really notice it when I start on a trip. I also tow this

It comes in at about 1.2 tonnes and the ball weight is only about 80kg but the amount of pitch is still about the same as the camper with 200kg ball weight - so the suspension seems to cope the same irrespective of the weight.

I am not sure what you can do - if the airbags are Ok which they obviously are, the only other thing to look at are the shocks - if they are old their control of the pitch will be reduced so maybe a new heavier grade might be the go - it depends on how much you tow and whether you can live with what you have now but if you upgrade what will the ride be like when not towing - I would have thought it would be Ok.

I have LLAMS so drive and tow on the road at 20mm below onroad height. On the gravel I normally go to onroad height and when offroad, the height will be selected as needed.

I would not be towing at offroad height for any distance as it will not be good for your CVs and other suspension components - so stay at onroad height and adjust when needed.

Cheers

e again thanks for the information. I will have to get my tow ball weight measured but as the Territory tows it without any problems I don't think that will be the answer. Shocks maybe the go. So you have used an IDD/ tool to alter your suspension settings. How do you think that worked out? I have thought it be be great to have a "freeway" height halfway between access and normal.

Yes check those shocks.

I do not have an IDD/ tool but have LLAMs fitted. See here http://www.llams.com.au/

With a combination of the standard height switch and the LLAMs switch I can go from access height to the equivalent of super extended on the go with the flick of a switch and go faster than 50kph at the equivalent of off road height.

LLAMS has 4 settings that adjust the height set on the vehicle switch - these are -20mm, same height, +35mm and +50mm. So I drive around with onroad set with LLAMS set at -20mm. When offroad on fast tracks I leave the vehicle at normal onroad height and and set LLAMs at 35mm or 50mm depending on the circumstances - as the height switch is still at onroad I can go faster than 50kph while at the equivalent of offroad height.

For the really hard stuff I set the car at offroad height and set LLAMS at +50 so actual height is close to super extended height. If you got caught up it can still go into extended automatically but if +50mm on LLAMS is set you are at the max height of the suspension.

LLAMs is a little expensive but is a great accessory to have. height adjustments on the move at the flick of a switch - no stopping to plug IDD tools in and do adjustments.

I used to tow a twin axle caravan late 90s with no stabiliser behind a Landcruiser and regularly did 80mph with no problems - caravan was loaded with heavy stuff over axle and everything else including 3kids was in Cruiser

2010 I started towing a twin axle with stabiliser behind RRS and first time I went over 60 I knew something was wrong. There was only me and swmbo in RRS with luggage but I don't think van was problem having spoke to owners so decided it must be air suspension

2013 bought another twin axle and rrs but just the same so can't think any other reason other than we used to carry lot more stuff for 3 kids in Cruiser making it heavier maybe

I know others say never had a problem and you shouldn't go over 60mph here but it's odd and made me nervous Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Thanks for the info guys. I had already got the info on the Llams just before you replied Garry.
Seems a great device but they didn't think it would help my problem .Suggested I contacted Aust. Air Bags in Qld., but they didn't have anything for an RRS.
So speaking to others it appears either new/better/stiffer shockers might be the go. Alas it appears that Bilsten and Koni made some years ago but they were a failure.
I have been told some newer aftermarket ones are now being made and I am following it up

No - LLAMS will not help with your towing - likewise aftermarket airbags if they exist will not do much.

Yes the major aftermarket shocks have not had a good reputation and the best seem to be the ones supplied by LR - I am not sure if they ae available in different grades.

Good luck with it but it does seem to be a side issue towing with the RRS. Have you asked on AULRO?

Cheers

Why would you buy it from LR and not a specialist tow bar place for about $45 and up.

An example here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Tow-Bar-Tongu...Swz2lXCun5

Yes you are correct why indeed , however it should be supplied. Issue for me is the right length , I have one that was supplied with my Touareg but it seems to short. Thanks for the links I'll try the long and hope that will be money well spent. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

Tried both the local Hayman Reese places in Wollongong and basically they did't have a clue , they can advise the part that goes with the Hayman bar but the RRS bar is fitted at factory and although the tongue fitting is standard the other dimensions may differ. So I'll take some measurements and then see how I go with the ones on the WEB. Just measured the one I have and am confident the cheaper one will give me the extra distance and for $45 I'll take the risk. Thanks for the help . if you see a Grey RRS SDV 8 in Canberra Friday it will be me. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
