Best rim size?

Hello everyone. Just joined and this is my first post.

I am just in the process of buying a RRS and narrowing down my various options to find a 2nd hand vehicle that fits my needs. I'll be looking for a 2010 or maybe 2011 vehicle and I see that most of them come with 20" rims and a few have 19" rims. I am not overly fussed about the looks (don't like the low profile look or ride), I will be using the car off road (muddy fields of Berkshire) and may need to fit winter tyres and/or snow chains at some stage.

Am I right in thinking that 19" rims are easier to find winter or off-road tyres for? Do chains fit OK on 20"?

If my suspicions are correct then I'd probably plump for 19", but they seem a lot harder to find than 20". I am right in thinking that the 19 and 20 are the 'normal' sizes aren't I?

Any advice gratefully received.

I'm not sure the Coopers are winter rated are they?

My question was more general - Is it easier to get 'softroad' winter tyres for 19" than 20"?
Is it easier to get chains on 19" than 20"?

Winter tires - 19" make more sense (more sidewall) and there's more of them as well.
Chains - no difference, as the overall diameter of the tire doesn't drastically change if you stick to the tire size chart from the B-pillar. Regards etc.,

You can fit 255/55/19 to a RRS. It's the Discovery size tyre. That brings in the Goodyear Duratrac which is marked as a winter tyre in all other sizes (Land Rover apparently didn't want it so marked on the Disco - no idea why).

You can get the General Grabber AT in 255/55/19, 255/50/19 (not sure how common that size is at the tyre dealers though) and 275/40/20. The AT is good all round tyre being pretty decent off road and in snow (not winter rated though) and good on road. Gets noisy as it wears.

The Cooper LTZ is available on 19 and 20 inch rims. Similar to the AT and not winter marked.

You can get winter tyres in both 19 and 20 inch.

I run my TDV8 on 255/55/19 Grabber AT. I have a set of 19 inch rims that I'm thinking of mounting Duratrac on

Obviously if you fit other than 255/50/19 or 275/40/20 you should check with your insurer as those are the approved sizes. Thumbs Up . 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Stick with 19, IMO. Pirelli ATRs come very highly recommended (excellent on and off road) - lots of info on the D3 site. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

ATR is an excellent tyre but not so good in muddy conditions as the Grabber AT. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Stick with 19"/20" . Do not go 22" as they have much less sidewall and tend to buckle and/or crack.

I ran 20" in summer and 19" in winter and preferred the 19" for comfort

19" also better for offroad and less risk of kerb or pothole damage Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
