United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Zambezi Silver
Air suspension noise / check engine light

I have owned a SC Sport since Oct 2005 and had several months of trouble free driving. However, about a month ago the “check engine” light came on. I booked it in for service the next day but then the light went off so I didn’t take it to the dealer.

Two weeks later, the check engine light comes on again, so I took the car to the dealer. He called me the next day to say that they were not able to diagnose the check engine light because it had turned off by itself. But they said they did perform some upgrades that were due on the car.

The problem is one of the upgrades involved the air suspension, and when they gave me the car back, the suspension was making a loud humming noise that can be heard both inside and outside the car. I took it back to the dealer, who said one of their technicians had not installed the upgrade correctly and they replaced it again.

One week later, the humming noise from the air suspension is back, and so is the check engine light. By the way the noise from the suspension can be heard when the car is in normal or access height, but the noise is not there when the car is actually being lowered or raised.

Any ideas? Thanks.

MDP, I know.. I should have signed up a long time ago.. great forum, really useful.

I'm due to take the car back to the dealer tomorrow, but I'm so angry that I gave them the car to fix the check engine light (which they couldn't fix) and they returned the car with a new problem!

Confused Your dealer should be able to see exactly what has happened with regard to warnings etc - it is all recorded in the cars memory - a complete log of all events.

Since they caused the problem with the noise I thought it would be better to have them fix it.. In London, there's also Stratstone and recently the Audi dealership in Battersea became a LR dealership.. Battersea would be closest but since it's so new do you think the service guys are familiar enough with LR issues?

Yes I've watched the slow progress of the Audi garage being transformed into the LR garage. Last night the whole showroom was empty ready for a refit. I doubt their techs are up to speed yet! Give them a few months! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

For what it's worth, I wouldn't touch Stratstone's service dept with a bargepole so if you do feel like taking it somewhere else - don't take it there.

I don't think we've heard of these issues, YY... although lots of us have had the upgrades that you refer to. Good luck with your dealer and keep us appraised of progress! Thumbs Up

Thanks.. will let you know. The noise from the suspension started because the upgrade of the air suspension area involved a part on the left side underneath the car that needed 'foam' on the inside. The dealer had put the part in without the foam part. That created a loud metallic sounding humming noise. After I took it back they said the technician had forgotten the foam part and that was causing the noise. So they replaced it, but now the noise is back.. less loud than before, but still there.

Got the car back from the dealer.

Check engine light -- faulty oxygen sensor causing this light to come on, something that has been discussed before on this forum.. i'm not sure why the dealer didn't find this cause last time.

Air suspension compressor upgrade -- the buzzing noise is still there most of the time.. 2 other SCs at the dealer also made the same noise in exactly the same area.. the service manager agreed that the noise was not insignificant and that the compressor upgrade seemed to have caused it, but that he hadn't heard anything from LR on this issue.

The best place to hear it is just in front of the back left wheel below the passenger door.. it can also be heard from inside the car if the car is idling and the street is not noisy.. the noise can come and go, but it can be created by simply lowering the car to access height and back again to normal height.. the noise was definitely not there before the compressor upgrade.

Any of you guys hear this buzzing noise?

+ a service and after a week the air suspension totally messed up and dropped
to its lowest setting and stayed there !!
Took the car back and they replaced the compressor and viola !! The car is like new,
