Help With Faults Please :(

Just had the call from main dealer down south.

My 3.0Tdv6 with 50k on the clock FLSH is leaking oil from sump & rear oil seal ( camshaft seal). Quoted me 14hours labour at a total of

1. £1071. - sump
2. 1107. - cam shaft seal

My warrenty (car care plan) said to the main dealer they don't cover external oil leaks. And because no main components need removing ( engine or gearbox) the camshaft seal is not covered.

Those prices seem ridiculous to me, ive done 1-2k since buying the car in january and cant believe a car with this milage and full service history can pick up faults like this. I need to get quotes from local garages who can do the job at a much cheaper price if poss. Any input would be great. MY 11 TDV6 Fuji White Onyx

I would suggest that you go looking for a non-franchise Land Rover specialist, the guys that I use for my 1996 Defender charge £35 ph labour compared to £120ph at the local franchised dealership and use genuine LR parts. There are plenty of good non-franchise specialists around and some that post here.
I was always told that a Land Rover leaking oil was just marking its territory! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks for the reply!

Well i wasn't too fussed until it started smoking from the oil burning on the exhaust. So the leak must be pretty bad to be smoking.

Also i live near a LR specialist but they are saying they need to get the engine out not just body off. And would need it for 2days labour minimum.. Which will put me back to the prices of LR main dealer MY 11 TDV6 Fuji White Onyx

Are you sure it's the cam seal ? I had a D3 in a while back and thinking the same ie cam seal. But when I looked further into it it was the oil filter/cooler assembley. It sits in the V of the engine it was leaking that badly it filled the V then leaked out over the rear of the engine and bell housing. 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

It's got to be worth getting LR involved too. A serious oil leak on a 50k mile vehicle is ridiculous. Perhaps they'd like to help pay for some of it - after all it's got a full LR service history so they can't claim it's not been looked after. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

LandRover won't have any of it. We have ordered 3 full fat & 2 sports in the last 6months ( for clients) and that has made no difference. I spoke with a Woman called EVA from LRUK and she said nothing we can do, take care!

Appalled to be honest and when asked how i could take this further, she said write me a letter and ill have another look at the case.

Full service history and the car in leaking from sump gasket, camshaft seal and another location I'm told by an indie who currently has the engine in bits MY 11 TDV6 Fuji White Onyx

Had the same problem , drips all over driveway. Indie did a smoke test. It was the badly seated V manifold on top of engine that ran down over engine. Cost £2.00 Oil seal,Replacement Oil and Filter,£135 labour and £95 to clean all oil from engine and components it came to £318 inc VAT. Was very pleased not to have leak itisme

LR Relations insist that a franchised dealer should diagnose the problem, and report to them . I had a Driveshaft Fail a couple of months ago 38,000 miles. They paid me £500 of the £507 bill, But as a credit to be spent at main agents itisme

so after spending £1450 i had the Camshaft seal done LH , Sump Gasket, Rocker Cover Gasket & breather tube ( told was not connected) & belt kit.

Previously on 1 or two occasions the car would burn oil on the exhaust and smoke from front passenger side previous to work being done.

Im 250 miles after having work done and as soon as the engine is to norm temp it looks like I've got a crack pipe gang under my bonnet... stop at lights and the smoke starts. Since having the work done it has got worse and now smokes on every drive which can be smelt clearly in and outside the car.

The indie said it took him a day to get the oil off he has never seen a RR like it, caked in OIL everywhere. Ive booked to go back this Friday and get the belly pans off and have a look as i can't drive it daily with the smoke that its creating.. Ive checked the oil level & it hasn't moved from when it left the garage (1 bar below full)

4months of RR ownership ... Full RR service History ..... £3895 so far

Please any help would be great. MY 11 TDV6 Fuji White Onyx

Hi and welcome. For future reference it is best to start a new thread not reply to an old one.

The faults you described very often occur when the battery is suffering from a low charge. Low voltage can really confuse the sophisticated electrical systems on these cars.

So beg borrow or buy a modern 'smart charger' such as CTEK branded (our favourite on this forum) and FULLY charge the battery i.e. leave it connected all day or overnight. The problems may all just cease.

Note that driving the car doesn't charge the battery up very quickly and you would need to drive continuously for over 10 hours to get anywhere near a full charge.

If after charging up the battery the faults go away for a while but then return it would suggest the battery may need replacing and/or the alternator needs replacing.

Best of luck. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

First I would suspect the Battery, second the alternator. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

If you are unable to sort the problem yourself, it may be worth getting getting hold of a mobile Land Rover Specialist, Flack or Bodsy etc. Loads of info about these guys on the Disco 3 Forum. Thumbs Up In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
