Puncture near sidewall

Today while doing my fortnightly tyre pressure check (haven't got TPMS), I found one with unusually low pressure. Quick inspection revealed a nail stuck right at the edge, very close to the sidewall. These are Vredestein winter tyres that I bought new and put on the car just a few months ago ... 8mm tread left on all four and were wearing perfectly evenly with absolutely no other damage Big Cry

I quickly realised the tyre was a write-off so loaded the car with my Pirelli all season tyres and took it to a local tyre shop (not my regular tyre & alignment place due to time constraints). The idea was to swap over earlier than planned rather than buying a winter tyre in March and storing for 8-9 months. The guy at the tyre shop reckoned he could repair it and if it was his own car, he wouldn't bother with replacing the tyre. This was surprising given he sells tyres too. I wasn't convinced and asked him to swap the tyres anyway but after the job was done, he insisted on repairing the puncture - for free.

This is how the "repair" looks like, outside and inside (apologies for bad quality photos):

I still don't believe the tyre is legal or safe but what do experts think? Also, given the other 3 are in perfectly good shape and got loads of tread (8mm), can I get away with replacing just this one come Autumn/Winter?

Not a tyre expert but would have thought that was to near the sidewall to repair safely. I'm sure there is some legal guidelines with puncture repairs, about being so far in from sidewall.

I personally wouldn't use it but as I say I'm no tyre expert.

Cheers
Col

Cheers all. Didn't think it was usable. At best put on a spare wheel for emergency use but I only have a space saver.

Any thoughts on mixing a brand new tyre with 3 slightly worn? Don't think tread would be too much more than 8mm on a new one? Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Pretty sure that there should be a patch as part of the repair on the inside. Major repair type. If done properly, no problem.

Also, no problem with your slightly worn and new tyre. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

I had similar, on my new van, took the tyre to the quick fit type places, both said not repairable. Then took it to a proper tyre company, they said it can be repaired, but it will cost more due to the extra work in the job, think the term was Vulcanised. And they said it was 100% safe and it's an approved repair. MY 13 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition

Hi guys, I am a tyre expert, I have my own tyre business in sheffield and I can guarantee you that tyre is NOT repairable! Its too close to the side wall and the guy hasn't even used the correct "plug patch" puncture repair! The thing he's put you in is something they use in bloody Africa or summat! Don't put it back on the car mate as it's not safe and will probably eventually blow out!

You did the right thing Fkarim, I had a similar puncture on one of my 315 35s and the tyre guy said no way it was repairable that close to the sidewall. Good on you for not taking the cheap option.

Yes, a new tyre isn't that much in the bigger scheme of things. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Vulcanising is legal,,BUT not on low profile tyres,I used to do vulcanising on tyres but the patch you use on the inside is too big to put on low profile tyres.
