Poor fitting seats sorted and update on gas tank slopping

Some of you will recall the poor fitting seat leather issue i had. Hunters pushed LR hard and after initially following certain protocol involving steaming permission was given for all my seat skins to be replaced (including padding). The work was done by a professional upholsterer. Before (lower picture) and after (upper picture) , top job and the seats are much plusher :-

I also have got go ahead for the gas tank slopping to be sorted. I can confirm there is a technical bulletin ( I saw the instructions) , it involves pushing a c 1 square foot piece of foam into the tank and then using a plastic bag also inserted and inflated to position the foam. The bag is removed.

I've got one last skin to be fitted in Feb and will get the slopping gas sorted then.

Foam, plastic bags? Sounds like a Solihull bodge in the great British Leyland tradition. Old habits die hard. They should replace the petrol tank with one with proper baffles. Mark

A foam filed tank is not a bodge, been used in motor sport for years!

So adding fire suppressing foam to aircraft not fitted from new is a bodge?
Have a read below.

I can personally attest that the foam in the AFSOC C-130's does work. I was flying a mission getting ready to enter Bosnia on an AC-130U back in 1998, and while we were tweaking the guns, two of our 25mm rounds explode spraying the aircraft with shrapmetal. One round exploded as it left the gun (in front of #2 prop), and the other exploded in the gun spraying the aircraft like a shotgun.

We ended up with 60+ holes on the left side of the aircraft to include the leading edge, #2 prop, #1 engine, and the left external fuel tank. The #1 eng and left external took most of the damage (25 holes in the left external fuel tank itself). There was evidence that some of the shrapmetal went all the way through the tank making dimples on the opposite side. I believe that the tank didn’t explode was due to the foam inside the tank.

After that flight I came to the conclusion that the Herk can take a hit. Our aircraft didn’t even flinch or act like anything happened, until sometime later with the first indication of damage was when the oil quantity started to decrease (due to many holes on the left side of the engine).

And you wonder why we fall in love with the Herk.

Gary :eek

Still think it's a bodge?

Unfortunately not having the foam in our C130s cost 10 lives in 2005.😢

We noticed within a week, and about 500 miles ie after very little actual use and immediately contacted the dealer.. Their own view was one of shock and that the leather had been laid onto the seat foam rather than fitted. I shall be monitoring how the seats now look during normal wear and won't hesitate to march it back in if not satisfied. Previous model had better looking seats after 80k miles. .. They appear sorted and much more wholesome than before.. but I have one last skin to be fitted and will watch for any degradation in meantime and overr the coming months. P400e HSE Portofino Blue and Ivory Seats.. it's like a yacht!!
