Scotland 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

Hello,

I'm Calum - Hoping to take delivery of a 2012 RRS next week all being well. I might use it to tow a caravan when we decide which one is best for us.

This will be my first Land Rover, so we'll see how it goes.

Great forum which was a great help before buying the RRS.

Thanks
Gixer

Newbie....! With an engine choice question.

Hi,

I’m a newbie, just introducing myself. The forum looks great and has already answered a lot of questions I have from the archived topics.

I don’t own an RRS yet. However I am at the do I really need one stage. I guess the answer to that must be yes or I wouldn’t be posting this…. Smile

Currently I am towing a small twin axle bungalow, (1.7tons) on the back of my BMW 528. The 528 has been converted to dual fuel, (LPG) and is returning the equivalent of 60mpg when motorway cruising, but not towing. The whole rig is very stable and very economical. If things were going to continue to remain that way I wouldn’t change my tow tug, but things are now changing.

I have decided to sell my house, put my stuff in storage and move into my caravan as my permanent home. The idea is then to tour France, Italy and Spain for a couple of years stopping in tempting locations to see if I like the location enough to buy my next home there and spend the rest of my life. That’s why I am considering a RRS.

My BMW 528 is ok for occasional tow tug use, but my payload is almost maxed out when towing and I really would need to carry a lot of stuff. I can see the RRS will afford me a similar payload to a 9 meter tag axle motor home. Also an RRS looks to be a cheaper and a more convenient alternative than a motor home with a small car in tow.

So all that said my first question is on the engines. The 3.0 RRS LR3 up to 2006 was the BMW M57 engine and having covered almost 900k trouble free miles with a series of these magnificent straight six engines I would normally automatically plump for one of these, but if I go for a later RRS LR3 it looks like I would have to go for the 3.6 V8 RRS – I think that is the Ford Lion engine, are they any good?

The other option is one of the 4 litre petrol variants of the RRS, but with an LPG conversion. Any comments on fuel consumption I could expect, (Motorway driving solo) and my best engine choice to make will be most welcome. Thumbs Up

I think you have the wrong engine / car history there.
BMW diesel was fitted to the Range Rover P38
BMW 3 litre straight 6 you mention was fitted the FF Range rover L322 (FF = Full Fat Range Rover, not the Sport)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_Rover In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Thanks for the information. I thought I had a handle on the Range Rover models, but obviously I got that wrong.

I can’t find much information on the Full Fat RR. Is that the one known as the Vogue?

I notice from your signature you drive a 2.7, which I believe is the V6 Ford engine. I know the 3.6 is the V8 Ford engine, are they good engines? By that I mean as reliable as the 3.0 BMW engine.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome.

Google the Lion V6 engine. It was a joint Ford Peugeot engine. I think it's one of the smoothest diesels ever made, it's very good. Not sure about the 3.6V8 diesel origins.

Scotland 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

Hello everyone!

I have just purchased a 2005 RRS SC and I love it. A few things I want to do to it so I am sure I will be asking questions soon enough.

Just had the front anti roll bar bushes done on it and its driving like a totally different car, I didn't even realise they were shot to bits when I bought it Shocked

United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black
New Member

Hi,

New member just outside Glasgow considering my first RRS purchase (got a supercharged Vogue at the moment). Looking for info and recommendations on which model is best (TDV6, TDV8, 4.4V8) and what are the drawbacks of each. Probably budgeting about £15-20k for a decent car. I'm sure this site will have all the stories, good and bad.....
