Key Fob - Falling to pieces!

Has anyone else encountered this problem…Its not a major issue yet but the rubber key front is coming away from the key fob, exposing the buttons underneath.

Ive thought about glueing it back but I'm sure thats a bad idea, would the keys be covered under warranty?!

Has anyone needed to get a new set from RR and is it expensive?

Thanks.

I've only had the car a month or so, its a 2010 RRS from Lookers so wouldnt this sort of thing be covered under the used car warranty or would they sweep it under the "wear and tear" cat!

At £160+ for a new key i think id take my chances with a bit of glue first.

After a few months of reading the heaps of useful information on this site and sister site Disco3.co.uk, I thought it was time to give something back...

Since buying my 05 SC a couple of months back I have been replacing tired parts to bring the old girl back to looking as close to new as I can.

One part of the car I interact with frequently is the 3 button key fob that had seen better days (shiny and scratched case). Faced with buying a new one and programming it up at great expense I decided to try and just replace the casing.

Several Internet searches later I found a manufacturer or a replacement case and took the plunge. A week later I had the case and made the mod to my primary key.

I have to say it went well and I am happy with the results at a fraction of a new key cost.

I took some pictures and wrapped them in a set of instructions that worked for me so you can see how it went.

I hope my experience is of interest. Please let me know if there are any errors or unclear parts in this document.

The rubber on my key fob started peeling away within a few months of getting the new vehicle. LR replaced it under warranty, although it took them a full day to program the new fob. 2013 RRS HSE Lux, Fuji White w/Silver Pkg, 5.0 V8

Fingers crossed its as easy as just switching over the internals!

Best £4.99 I've spent in a while.

A bit of ummm and ahhhh'n later i found a workshop PDF online which basically walks you through pulling the old key apart!

5 minutes later and with the use of one flathead screwdriver we are looking like new and working fine!

NOTE - i was worried about removing the battery and needing it re programmed but its says at the bottom of the PDF - IDS / SDD is not required to program the key at the end of this process.
