Don't ruin the RRS Zilchy!

I drove the Broome to Cape Leveque road on Sunday (and return) in a rental Pajero. The corrugations were very bad and deep sand in places. They ain't pretty but the Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun for the Bighty folks) is one tough 4wd and is actually a good car if you don't want anything special.

well trip ended prematurely. Stopped at Musgrave Roadhouse overnight, started the vehicle in the morning
and got Restriced Performance light followed by the Engine Management light (amber), Censored off or what, vehicle recovered to Trinity Land Rover in Cairns at vast expense to myself (LR assist paid about 37% of the 2,6K bill) , i now have to also pay for flights back to Sydney as they cannot start looking at it until next week.. ask me how much i am really Censored off

Looking at some of the similar tales (i was towing a 900KG Camper trailer), apparently its not an uncommon
fault and there was a software and ECU upgrade ... does anyone know if there is a tech bulletin out for this

Had a major service and full clean bill of health 2 days before leaving sydney.. Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Did you do a hard reset and read the codes to find out what the issue is?

What did you do to resolve the issue before calling the tow truck? The car should still have been drivable if you had an amber EML rather than a red one.

Normally those sort of codes can be cleared and the issue sorted by doing the reset. Often caused by the ECU getting an unexpected Manifold Air Pressure reading, particularly when towing.

The other obvious one is failed EGRs - car can drive like a dog but will still drive.

It is a bummer when this happens and I am sorry this has mucked up your trip.

I hope it is all OK.

I'm sure there was a software update a couple of years ago. Had something to do with restricted performance after towing for a certain time. Be very surprised if your dealer hadn't uploaded it quite a while ago. Anyway let us know the outcome.
The other thing it could be is a holed intercooler pipe, had that with my D4 and gave the same alerts. SDV8 arrived and fantastic even the infotainment!

I was not aware you could read some of the codes via the satnav until researching the potential probs today Garry, so no. Also trying to drag it 200 K's back to tarmac might be a trek to far if it totally gave up in the middle of nowhere, so decided on the safer option of asking LR to sort it. LR stated they would not send out a tech to do initial analysis that maybe would have saved 24 hours delay and vast expense if he could have reset it directly with the diag tools.

I take it from your discussion that you did not have a code reader with you - I carry a Faultmate FCR with me which allows code reading and clearing - unfortunately doesn't do much else but doesn't cost nearly as much as a full Faultmate.

I hope it all works out quickly for you - in the ideal world the dealer will read the codes and fix things immediately.

Good luck with it.

Cheers

They are doing a smoke test on the vehicle, suspect turbo or intercooler hose problems.. but they did not get back to
me for over 3 hours after going to do that so expecting the worst Evil or Very Mad Do Turbo's just go or is it a gradual process? Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

The 3.0s do have a bit of history of blowing one of the turbos but usually happens early so usually covered by warranty. More likely on an older vehicle is a split turbo/intercooler hose.
