Winter Tyres 275/45/R20

I've just put on a set of Vredstein Wintrac 4xtreme tyres 275/45/R20 (thanks Col) and whilst the overall diameter is up 28mm from the summer tyres (275/40/R20) I can report that the ride quality isn't noticeably any different. A concern I had was that they might rub… however, I confirm that they don't… The other concern was that the gearing would suffer and the car would labour a bit more but it doesn't seem to make any difference although they are are 3.85% bigger.

Turn in isn't as sharp, but to be expected coming from a squarer shouldered Pirelli Scorpion tyre. The wet/cold weather performance is yet to be seen, but judging by the tread pattern I'm hoping for a more sure footed response in the inevitable snow and wet days to come.

Aesthetically, they fill the arches quite a bit more but I'm somewhat undecided as to if I'm bothered by this. Will send a pic…

Could I get the wheel nuts off when changing them over? I thought I was going to snap my 2ft breaker bar… so much for 140Nm of torque on the wrench settings Mr Land Rover dealer who serviced the car and rotated the wheels last month! 2018 RR Velar R-Dynamic, Silver/Ebony, Privacy Glass, lots of toys

I recommend that when you visit your dealer you take these off as others have had warranty claims rejected for non standard sizes. You need to tell your insurer too as this is now classed as a modified vehicle Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Thanks Muddy,

I cleared it with both before buying them and they both said it wouldn't be an issue… however getting that in writing is another thing! Ultimately though, yes swap wheels before warranty claims... 2018 RR Velar R-Dynamic, Silver/Ebony, Privacy Glass, lots of toys

Interestingly Muddy, on the LR site for tyres: https://www.landrover-tyres.com/GetTyre/JL...%20Kingdom

On 2013 RRS vehicles there is a whole plethora of options whether you be on a 19" through to 22" rims there is a vast array of approved tyres. With quite a number of Black Editions etc manufactured and delivered in 2013 it does start to open this out to question.

One would assume they mean the new Sport? 2018 RR Velar R-Dynamic, Silver/Ebony, Privacy Glass, lots of toys

Correct they mean the new sport but old photo so someone will jump to the wrong conclusion. I saw this and selected 2012 just to be sure I did not mix things up Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

New Zealand 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Autobiography Santorini Black

Work This One Out

Plate on Drivers Door Wheel/Tyre Size

235/65 x 17 = 737mm Overall Diam.
255/55 x 18 = 738mm "
255/50 x 19 = 738mm "
275/40 x 20 = 728mm "

Handbook Says Approved Winter tyres

235/65 x 18 = 763mm Overall Diam.
255/55 x 19 = 763mm "

If your vehicle is fitted with 20" wheels it will be necessary to fit a set of 18 or 19 inch wheels before winter tyres can be fitted.

So just to be different I run 275/45 x 20 = 756mm Overall Diam. both Summer and Winter Tyres. The vehicle has been into the local main dealer for service etc. they have also just inspected it to extend the approved extended warranty for another year and have not commented on the tyre size at all.

I don't know I suppose it's anybody's guess.

Cheers
Col
