"This is a pretty serious off road coarse"

Really? Looks like a muddy track with a few puddles!

Hardly a test for the Porker TBH If it had failed that, then big embarrassment all round... (probably why they selected it) RRS gone

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black

I tend to agree awd, the offroad course was a bit of a joke, i'm sure quite a few lower end market 4x4's would of managed that without a problem, i know ive taken a few offroad in a lot worse conditions than that. Whistle

The outcome of that test was: "the Porker is the better driver's vehicle, the Sport is the better wafting vehicle". The reality is that almost no one in the UK is going to be taking either vehicle off road. Neither are likley to go on track either. So, for the majority of people it comes down to "drive" or "waft".

I'm not surprised the Porker did well on that not-at-all-tough off road route. It's actually got the kit to do a good job of off roading and, in the UK at least, will go anywhere a Sport would be expected to go.

Looks and badge preferences will be the key factors for the majority of buyers - not off road or track ability. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Real world, the Cayenne is actually ok off road. It's got much better ground clearance than the "old" Sport with the air suspension option. It can also have a locking rear diff as part of the optional torque-vectoring system.

I guess the Cayenne is like the Sport - most people think it's rubbish off road or in the snow(*). In reality, like the Sport, with appropriate tyres it's good enough for most people in both situations.

(*) I've been told a few times that my Sport is crap off road and will get stuck at the first sign of a snow flake. Unsurprisingly, this usually comes from people who drive rusty Disco 1 / 2 on knobbly tyres. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

All the cayenne s I've seen are, fo example in the snow in chippy (Oxford) have been next to useless...a friend ditched hers after a long Porsche ownership for disco 4.

I did get strange looks in a Porsche dealership looking underneath one.

Of course the active duff on the current sport is used on road and makes massive changes off road...often forgotten

Mixing with lots of land rover people of classic disco and defenders/90s etc...not one doesn't recognise how good the sport is off road...but like the d3and4 it's very wide with makes tracks very difficult Mike

I wonder how many of the useless Cayennes are running around on summer high performance rubber so totally useless in snow.

I chatted to a chap who has a Cayenne last shooting season. He'd specced it specifically because it would see off road use. He did worry that it might struggle but he'd found that it got him everywhere on the farm and shoots that he wanted to get to. He was deeply impressed by its ability compared to the D4.

A lot comes down to tyres and the driver.

The Sport, of course, is excellent off road when suitably tyred. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
