Spare size

Thinking about swapping the 275 40 20 Continentals that came with the car for some 275 45 20 in either GG UHP or the new GG GT. Both are road based and the car stays on road 99% of time.

I know that the 45 profile is above the stock 40 but lots of reports saying ride is much improved with the extra rubber and there is about a 3.5 percent increase in rolling radius.

My query is regarding the spare............I was thinking to change the 19 inch skinny that came with the car to a proper 19 inch alloy with 255 55 19 tyre which matches up 1 percent different to the 275 45 20 tyres.

Is there enough space to store this size spare inflated under the RRS or will it have to be kept deflated ?

I know it will stick out more than the skinny and already have contacted Uncle Ray in that regard............

If anyone out there has experience on keeping a slightly oversize spare, I would appreciate your comments. 12MY RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra / Black + contrast/ Grand Black

I have a full size 20" alloy with 275/40/R20 tyre and no problems apart from it being more visible as you mentioned. Keep it inflated to the specified pressure.

It's also a very tiny thing, but it will also reduce your 'exit angle' from decents due to it protruding slightly more, but I guess that's not an issue for 99.9%% of people Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Ok.Fitted the RLD protector and got rid of the skinny spare. Totally impressed with the construction & quality of Uncle Ray's product Thumbs Up ..............the laser cut 'R.L.D' in the centre of the metal plate is a nice touch also.

I had a 255 55 19 Scorpion on a Disco 4 19 inch XS rim which I put in the spare bay and it fit no problem.

Would the D4 rim be suitable as a spare if the offset is slightly different from the RRS alloys?

Overall diameter of tyre not much of an issue as 255 55 19 is less than 1% larger than the 275 45 20 on the car right now.

Anyone else here use a D4 19 inch as spare? 12MY RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra / Black + contrast/ Grand Black

The obvious negative................if I get a flat tyre and there is no spare then the car either has to be towed away or I pay some emergency mobile fitter the best part of £250 to put a new tyre on if the damaged tyre cannot be repaired.

I don't know about the weight factor...........full size spare probably 25 kilo more in weight and this is going on a car that can take 5 adults plus baggage and tow a couple of tons as well.

I don't get concerned about the extra weight if there are 4 people in the car instead of the usual one or 2. 12MY RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Sumatra / Black + contrast/ Grand Black
