Range Rover Sport SDV6 2012

Hi guys,

In 2008 I bought a brand new RRS TDV8 with dynamic response system. I sold it after 2 months, when I saw that dealers and Land Rover will not do anything about it. 3 years later I see that there are no results regarding this annoying issue. Well, I think I found the answer. I just bought 2012 RRS SDV6 HSE WITHOUT DR System - WOW, it does NOT knock! Car is perfect. And is much worse than driving with DR - NO! - It drives exactly the same!

So if you have DR in your car, just take it out. I don't care how, take it out and throw into the garbage.

Front Suspension knocking

I purchased a 2008 RRS TDV8 HSE last year from Stratstone. I had read the various posts on here regarding this issue before and since purchasing the vehicle. I've been noticing this knocking sound recently, strangely not all the time and with no particular obvious reason for when it does occur.

I've just had the vehicle in for it's MOT at the dealers and mentioned this issue (the vehicle is still under the years warranty until April) and they do seem to know about the issue and accept it is a warranty job. The actual report states ' requires bulletin for arc bushes and clamps mass dampers and body shock removal due to knock' does this sound correct and is this the correct solution?

Advice/ comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Front Suspension knocking

Do you have dynamic response? if yes, take it out and throw it into the garbage, trust me you will not regret, your car will be worth much more to you and for the sale later. Just do it. If you don't have dynamic response you have the problem with something else, and if you have a good dealer/service guys, and it is under warranty, make sure you give them a bit extra money, especially to the guy who is head of the service, let them fix this problem with you and enjoy your car.

Yes, that roughly describes the right Technical Bulletin.

Yep, mine knocks and rattles.

I read most of the 29 pages on this subject, and the topic seems to be quietening down; is that to say LR have sorted the problem or they just get on and deal with it now?

My my10 HSE with dynamic response, was not bad at 6000 miles when I bought it from LR UK, but at 10K miles (and 10 months warrenty left), it drives me nuts. It sounds like a 100k Ford Escort over poor surfaces, and as it is getting worse with miles, it sounds like bushes or roll bar D bushes as discussed in these pages.

I put it up on an MOT bay ramp on the jiggle plates and gave it a good jiggle and found no movement in the ball joints etc, but there is obviously lots more to it than that - that I did not know about until today.

So, can anyone update me with the latest general position on presenting this rattly front suspension problem to the dealer, and is there a more up to date service Bulletin than the last one I can find
from 2009 LTB00204v3[1].pdf that I can have to hand if I get the BS treatment and the blank stare?

Have they fixed it , if so when, what vin number?

Suspension rattle solved

Took it into the dealer, got it back 36 hours later and..... bliss, all is quiet. Very Happy

They said they fitted new D bushes and a new harmonic balancer kit, all as per the most recent Bullitin Feb 2012 but would not show me it.

Without removing the under pans, there is not much to see, except there are two dirty great lumps of metal bolted to the front chassis outriggers just behing the front wheels. I cant really see how they help anything out there but hey, the noise has all gone, so whatever, it sorted it.

Had a return trip to the dealer immediately, when the suspension had a fit the next day going up when it said it was locked down, and did not drop at speed because it said it was locked down.... and the forward alert said it was not working... but the dealer said they fiddled with various Modules and cleared the fault codes, all good techno babble for the technician leaving a sensor off I suspect.

So there is hope, and it is so much nicer to drive. 4 Landrovers and 7 Range Rovers in 40 years.

Clunk clunk

I recently purchased an RR Sport HST TDV8. I come from previous cars of 2 Lexus LS400 and most recently the LS430 - I expect quiet driving.
What do I often get -- "clunk , clunk ". Exploration on the internet suggests I am not alone, which is bad enough; but also that JLR do not recognise a problem and can not fix it.

I have seen a post suggesting disconnection of the anti roll bar ARB; not a step I wish to take. Upon investigation it is not a "fault", nothing is dangerous; it is just bad design. It would appear to be designed to clunk. The ARB is mounted in two large rubber bushes and connected to the upper suspension via two long tie-rods. The bushes restrict of the ARB motion up/down and front/back. They allow rotation ( they need to do so) and allow lateral movement. The tie-rods restrict lateral motion within approx 15mm. All well so far. Then somebody decided to place bump stops on the ARB either side of the bushes about 5mm distant. Needless to say if the ARB moves laterally more than 5mm then "clunk" as the ARB stop hit the bush. The ARB moves laterally if one wheel moves up or down a significantly different distance to the other. Most noticeable for me on local roads with lots of potholes at low speed.

I made an acetal bush to fit up against the bush and a tight fit to one of the bump stops, fitted it ; and now no clunking; almost, but not quite Lexus like!

So it can be sorted by good design of the ARB lateral positioning; either originally or with after fit correction.

My TDV8 developed the dreaded clunk over the last few months. New ARB bushes front and rear (fitted under warranty) have resulted in a clunk-free drive.

I believe LR did develop an uprated ARB bush so they must have recognised the fault at some point. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Where to start

Hi all, this is my first post as a new member - this topic has been brilliant although the bain of my life.

I bought my first RRS mid July, 09 TDV8. Had a few issues, the most predominent being the clunking which they couldn't fix despite lots of hard work from Stratstone Aylesbury and Burnham. Incidentally Charlotte and Hannah at Aylesbury were brilliant as were Fiona and Mark Stevens (dealer principal) at Burnham. I eventually gave the car back and upgraded to a 59 reg 5.0 supercharged. Nice car, but cheaper to fly. The TDV8 was also pretty tatty elsewhere, turns out the previous owner was a certain Robson Green who clearly cares more about fishing than keeping his motor clean.

Same problem with the SC, just got it back from having all the bushes changed and everything else tightened up, but still get that awful dynamic response noise which I pick up on everytime going over bumps...not sure if I can live with this severe design fault, sorry I mean 'characteristic" as LR like to describe it.

I'm hoping for a software update or other new fix in the near future, though it does seem to have died down, I wonder if all those concerned eventually gave up and sold out? I suppose a lot of people also can zone out. Anyway, I check this forum once a week or so just in case some magical cure is discovered overnight. Ben

Mine had new rear antiroll bar assembly fitted and also the later modified compressor and relay (I think LR has changed supplier) which, with the updated software, has transformed the car's ride and handling.

Thanks drdelrrs, I'd be really interested to know a little more about the work you had done as with a few months of manufacturer warranty left, it may be worth one last shot before I get rid - my email is benoneill@hotmail.co.uk

Cheers Ben

Has anyone tried having these anti roll bar bush spacers fitted? I'm considering doing it on mine. Will report back when I get round to it.

well picked up my 56 plate RRS with 46K miles on the clock 3 weeks ago. On the way home - clunking form the front end. Over the last 3 weeks it been in the delaership for 4 days - new ARB bushes, new lower arms, new ARB links and some work on the steering column - and still the same noise. Having read through a lot of this thread I am a bit concerned they wont be able to fix it. I left it at the L/R delaership at the end of last week. Waiting for someone from L/R factory to look at it. The service guys at the dealership have been good - other than not fixing it ! - talking about an exchange vehicle if they cant get it sorted. Time will tell - least they gave me a 2012 RRS fro the duration.

Wishing I had stuck with the Disco.

I had the dreaded knock on my 2010 HSE. The bushes have been replaced now, so hopefully that will be the end of that....I will see when i pick it up. Neutral MY16 SDV6 Autobiography
