you won't go far wrong with just a sample kit for starters

something like this
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing/po...d_220.html

or this is suposed to be a good polish from meguiers
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing/po...d_823.html

both the above are available in smaller or larger bottles, Last time i did my car i used about half a small 8oz bottle and it was said that i may have used too much (on a FL2 though)

EDIT
Or you could look at this DoDo Juice Lime Prime

I've just had mine done with a 5 stage Zaino process and very happy with that.
Depends on what the surface is like before you start I guess. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Whats wrong with the autoglym stuff - extragloss protection and deep shine have worked wonders for me for years! Mike

more designed for hand application

I rate super resin polish (SRP) better than Ultra deep shine (UDS), as i alway get better results withSRP

I think SRP has more fillers in it to mask swirls than UDS too, SRP works well with a DA too

Extra Gloss Protection, is a good product to use on the last stage, needs a couple of coats to really get the best out of it

Agree for hand use - im not a machine buffer person - never got into it (but do own one).

Agree with what you say - when its new like mine (and with supaguard) i only use the EGP and try to do it each wash (even though it does last) there is a nack to applying it, i sometimes get.

SRP is my favourite - my detailer (who also does things like lifeshine treatments) went through when to apply and paintworks etc...his advice was to regularily use from new the EGP and only in a few years will you really need to think about SRP unless you scratch it - he was right his advice served me well with the last two cars....even after i scratched up the new defender Mike
