RRS + Kamei Roofboxes

Just a quick heads-up in you are wanting to fit two slimline Kamei 310 roofboxes to your genuine RRS roofbars...

I have two boxes which I've used on my other vehicles with the Thule aerobars which are quite a bit wider than the RRS bars.

It was touch and go whether or not I'd be able to fit the two boxes side by side on the RRS but good news is, they fit....just...with about an 1" to spare.

In addition they work with the same feet that you use to attach the boxes to the Thule bars.

This gives you an extra 620L of space on the roof for the trip down to the Alps.

We're off in 2 weeks.

With the boxes mounted in this position, you can open the tailgate fully.

However, you can only open one top box at a time because the two boxes only just fit in the lateral sense.

I'll let you know what it does to the gas mileage.

No problems with satnav....yet...I was wondering what difference they might make...

The only issue you might have is the odd "whistling" noise which is presumably an aerodynamic effect of the wake of one box on the other, or across/through the remaining gaps left in the roofbars themselves (when you remove the rubber insert) and between the bottom of the boxes and the bars.

Its tricky to eliminate because I'm sure its dependent on which way the wind is blowing and sometimes doesn't occur at all.

At an indicated 80, when there is no whistle, the noise level is totally fine....just a soft low pitch roar can be heard if you listen closely.

With the Harmon Kardon on you will notice neither the roar or the whistle. 00 Audi B5 S4 MRC550'ed

Today I totally eliminated the whistle by taping up the rails and bars with duct-tape underneath the boxes.

Pleased about that.

Hi SR71,

i would load up the rear of the RRS first and when the tail gate is closed, shift the roof boxes to the rear,
to craete a better aerodanamic model.
I know it is a hassle, and the rear can not be opened, but it is worth it on long trips.

Sometimes it is not enough to do our best;
sometimes we must do what is required.

Thats a bloody good idea Sky but my concern is that with snow forecast in Northern France Fri evening/Sat morning and not being sure what it is doing over the Jura, the last thing I want to be doing in the snow by the side of the road when I get a puncture or get stuck or need my chains is moving the boxes around just to get in the rear to access my gear.

I think if we were 2 up in the car I'd take the steps you recommend coz I can access the gear through the rear doors but since we're 4 up, the car is going to be rammed with our boards/skis/food/gear and 3 other people...

We're sharing the diesel costs so its their pain as well!

Thumbs Up

On my A3 2.0 TDi the boxes knocked the consumption down ~10mpg so I'm thinking on the RRS, the effect might be about 5mpg although I've not actually looked at relative frontal areas etc etc?

Just for those interested, the rationale for using 2 boxes is the ability to use the additional roof space when you don't need both boxes for a bike carrier or two, or alternatively, when you're skiing/boarding, to keep one box for dry stuff and one for wet. 00 Audi B5 S4 MRC550'ed
