Dealership advertising cars

Hi I just wondered why so many dealerships don't actually put the picture of the car for sale in the advert. Instead in many cases there is a mish-mash of 'digitally prepared' images. There is just something that grates me about that. I understand that they are all 'the same cars' but different colour combinations etc but it's almost as if it's too much effort. I think a well presented car with care in taking the photographs can make the difference in you going ... nice! or ... hmm just another black RRS :-I. You would expect the opposite to be true really, independant suppliers and private sales to show lack of effort.

Any thoughts ?

P.S. Forgot to add as a prepective purchaser it kinda puts a -1 score against those dealerships before I start. Kev

If LR can not afford £2 for a brochure for their cars, how can we expect individual photos of each car at the dealers, just cant be bothered springs to mind purple people eater

The approved user locator has a decent set of pics for most cars for sale at franchise dealers. Obviously independents may or may not spend time and money on pics - but I agree with you, ads for anything without pics are a non-starter for me.

Hopefully I can explain (well for us anyway).......................

When a dealer buys a vehicle that they would like to retail then they load the details onto a central database. At that moment in time the car will 'go live' on Land Rover's Used Locator however it will show a library picture based on the specification of the car. This information is then shared with other media partners such as Autotrader etc who pick up a feed from the dabase each night.

Some dealers will take their own pictures and some have an agency who take the snaps. These pictures are then uploaded onto the system, and then over night the various databases are updated with the picture. We have an agency take our photo's once a week, therefore we can sometimes upto a week where library pictures are shown.

Most dealers will also load cars on the system which are due in soon. If I know that we will be taking in a retail part-exchange in this weekend then I will load it onto the system (obviously with a lib pic) so that we can potentially make some appointments for customers to view the car early the follwoing week (once it has been quality checked, prepared and cleaned).

Used stock is moving quite quickly at the moment, and it is not not uncommon to sell a vehicle before it arrives 'subject to viewing' which means that a picture is never taken, however the car is listed.

Some dealers will have a 'proper' photo manipulated so that the background looks like a generic forecourt. This menas that the photo's can be taken anywhere and then remastered.

Finally, you may find that some dealers did not take pictures in the snow (we didn't) as you would end up with a mish-mash of some taken with a snowy backdrop and some without.

Hope this helps?

So basically, we very rarely see a picture of the actual car that is for sale? purple people eater

Thanks for the explaination.

Surley though all manufacturer types main delears are in exactly the same boat, and follow a similar procedure ? Yet other manufacturers put the photos on, so the fact that LR dealers don't put the pictures up when the car is advertised is just highlighting that others can manage but LR can't ? Kev

You aren't going to buy a car from a photo, the spec list will tell you if its the car for you, as for the condition of the vehicle seeing it in the flesh is the only way!

I think you missed the point. We are selling them before the photo's are taken and uploaded onto the system. I can only speak for us a Lookers Park Royal. If I could take professional photo's of a vehicle that I don't yet have then I would.......... honestly I would!! Laughing

I agree but given I live in Scotland and there is more choice at a greater distance, I would assess from photos as well any other information spec etc, if I should travel to the selling location or not. Thumbs Up Kev
