From our friends at Deloitte & Touche:

Quote:
VAT Status and Used Cars

The use to which a car is put will determine its status for VAT purposes. In turn, that VAT status will determine whether VAT should be charged on the disposal of the car and hence whether there is any VAT available for recovery in the hands of a subsequent owner.

If VAT has been fully recovered on a car, that car will be “VAT qualifying”. If a qualifying car is sold VAT will be chargeable on its sale, and recoverable by the purchaser under the rules outlined above.

If input VAT recovery has been restricted on a car at any point in its life, that car becomes “Non-Qualifying”. VAT will not be due on the sale of a non-qualifying car.

As you well know, Kam, this doesn't mean a hill of beans to me... but the entire article is here:

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

In Supertrotter's post elsewhere advertising RRS's for sale on a big website, I notice that several of the cars being offered are VAT qualifying.......... I assume that they are dealer's demo cars that they are unable to sell the normal way. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Tim, this is the site where I bought mine.

They are all UK ordered, UK dealer supplied and UK Spec.

All are new and unregistered unless it states otherwise. You are the first registered owner and ours came with 7 miles on the clock.

Dealer demos don't generally tend to sit around. One dealer told me they have to keep them for a min. 3 months as they are given a write down cost from LR.

However, demand is so high that most just sell them at list after 1 or 2 months and presumably still get some write down cost from LR - Therefore profiteering! Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Yes, money-grabbing Censoreds these dealers... they don't call them stealers for nothing. I remember the fiasco over M5 demos when they first shipped. My local dealer had sold (and more to the point, been allowed to sell) their M5 demo before it even arrived at the dealership.... meaning that nobody could test drive one, even those that had been waiting 2 years for delivery! All got v messy... Rolling Eyes

Have got one of the accountants that work for us, on the case. There are differing rules concerning cars, so he is going to investigate it, nothing he has come across before to be honest. Its unusual for a trader to ask a private seller for a VAT qualifying vehicle.. its not like im a trader myself is it..

Yeah i had to pay list for my RRS and it was a 3 month old demo, well not technically a demo, a guy bought it, then decided he didn't want it on delivery day, after the car had been registered to him, (don't know how he got out of this..) but because it is such a high demand car, the dealership thought.. sweet another car to run as demo.. so kept it themselves, and decided to sell it as an ex demo, as that was what it was to be honest for the entire three months before i took it home with me.

I had to pay the list of £44.5k for the RRS.. but as it had 4k on the clock, i demanded privacy glass, which i got free (dealer fit) and the extras that were already on the car, i didn't have to pay for. Tracker horizon, mats, bluetooth etc.. so seemed ok to me considering i could have it there and then, and a lot of traders were premium selling back then!

RS4 which was also done in the same way as the M5, all demo's were sold pre delivery, so no drives, just showcased to customers in dealership for two weeks, so i saw it and sat in it.. but have had to wait till April 1st for my test drive, as that was when their new Avus demo RS4 was arriving.. now told it aint got there yet!!! blooody great.. even though i only ordered in January.. im still hacked off.. good thing i haven't even seen one on the road.. knowing my luck one of my neighbours would pull up in one or something..

Much respect to the Jay-Meister Bow down

By the way Jay, my best mate is test driving a CLK55AMG on Saturday.

I know it's not 'The Daddy' engine like yours and the E55 (Supercharged 476bhp) but still, a 5.5V8 with 380ish bhp (minus supercharger) and a sound like a NASCAR is a mouth watering proposition. Wink Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad
