United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Bonatti Grey

If Gordon Brown wanted to encourage greener cars, changing road tax rates isn't the way to do it. These changes make such a little difference and it wont effect anyone’s car buying decision. After all, would £40 a year increase stop you buying a £45K RRS?
What he should do is introduce a zero rate VAT on 'green' cars. Then these cars, which are typically more expensive anyway, would be cheaper and more attractive to buyers in the first place. It would probably encourage manufacturers to bring out new models sooner too. Matt

RRS ownership for 1 yr, then D3 for 2 yrs. Then cut back to old bangers and working my way back up through two Peugeots in 6 months. Now got Saab 9-5 2.3t and enjoying the performance!

'Fat Head' Brown will never remove tax on anything. What you give to one, you take HEAVILY from another.

Takes ciggies. Govt. pretend they want everyone to stop smoking but the loss in revenue would cripple the economy. Far more rrevenue lost vs what they would save on NHS.

Good idea... it's all about perception though with these idiots. The feeling that he has "increased" taxation on these cars means it looks like he's done something positive. You're right though, this won't make a jot of difference to anyone spending 40k+ on a car.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

I'm glad that he didn't apply it as an extra tax on SUV's/4x4's or whatever you care to call them - all large displacement engines with high emissions will be charged the equivalent of an extra tankful of go-juice a year. As you all have said it will have negligable effect on any of the owners of these cars, it might make a few folks who were thinking of moving up to a bigger car think again, but I very much doubt that any existing owners will change their cars for something less polluting. If anything these cars will become bigger status symbols! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
