Chancellor to increase VED on SUVs "substantially"

Just heard on the R4 Sunday newspaper reveiw that some papers are predicting a "substantial" increase in Vehicle Excise Duty for city based SUVs in the Budget next week. One wonders how he will differentiate between SUV's that only drive in the city and all the others? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

but what's a substantial increase? £50, £100, £500??

If it's either of the first two is that really going to put people off buying £40,000 + cars...I doubt it Wink Chips with everything

Who cares if its just city based owners... makes a change that city folk should pay more rather than us country dwellers supporting London through our taxes. D3 owner from the other side...

Although I am a country dweller I'm also a 2 SUV, single person household... right in the firing line I think!
I think this is just playing to the popular vote, as was said earlier it won't stop those who can afford to run SUV's from doning so. There was a very interesting item on our local radio station on Wednesday where a reporter took a member of the Alliance against 4x4's (what ever they are called) out into the Perthshire countryside where there has been over a metre of snow fallen....... in a Toyota Prius. The idea was to persuade the mothers on the school run that they should give up their SUV's. The person from the protest group got laughed over the horizon............ many roads were blocked and there were heaps of snow everywhere, but live was continuing as normal for those with 4x4's whereas the Prius not only got stuck, they damaged the bonnet and front airdam when they slid off the carriage way into a snowdrift! There was no arguement and the city dwelling lady in her Prius had to admit that SUV's were really quite useful once one of the wives on the school run had attached a tow rope to the back of the Prius and pulled it out of the white stuff! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Nah, it's the wrong target; the reason for global warming is due to the lack of pirates. Here's a graph to convince you all:
