My brother in law's father's car has just gone into LR reporting: Failure of parking brake.
Car is under warranty still, has around 20k on the clock, and is literally hardly used, only the family wagon for trips away etc.. is a Dec 55 plate..

After having it all day: They have sent it back having carried out the following work:

Rear Discs, Brake Pads, Shoes..
And a fat bill for: £506.00

Hmm i just rang them enquiring what the work was done, and if they can fax me the job sheet/invoice.. the guys approach to my call was a little suspicious, and he passed it to the service manager who has said he will fax me the sheets over in a minute. Have someone i know at LR making enquiries on this, and he knows the DP at this showroom..

The guy who this car belongs to, is mid 60's and is very trusting and relatively wealthy.
I just feel before he's been taken advantage of on invoices etc, so hence why he's querying this with us.. but just wanted to guauge your opinions on this.. would you pay this or would you query this?

Well the cars just been delivered back.
They said: we'll take the D3 back if you don't pay us now.
I would have personally said keep it, and kept the courtesy car for the weekend..

But family didn't want to get that confrontational.. so i said to just post date the cheque for monday, while we get this issue ressolved.. as they feel its rather steep too.. so now have the weekend to check this out..

Kam to be honest it sounds about right.....the price that is....I still think they should always phone the customer and say what they intend to do and how much.

I suppose it depends on the cause of the EPB failure.

Sounds like they're inferring that it failed due to the discs, brakes and shoes (for some reason best known to themselves at the moment). I know from my own RRS that £506 is probably not too far off the mark if you had to take your car in to have them replaced at a LR dealer because you asked them to. Brake pads etc aren't warranty items either, unless you can show they are faulty, but they won't replace them under warranty simply due to being worn by 20k's use.

So, couple of points I'd make:

1) Was your BIL's dad asked if they could go ahead and replace them before they just did it?
2) I'd want proof that the EPB failure was caused by wear/tear on the braking components

Good idea postdating the cheque - let's hope you can get a decent resolution and that it's not just a stealer out to make a quick buck on a Fri  

Hourly rate on the D3 is about £110 ph - it's steep but this is what LR charge. FYI I hade a full set of pads & Discs changed at my friendly local garage for £230 inc parts.

As for the EPB again look at Disco3 it's always a topic being discussed. RRS 2.7 TDV6 HSE Zambezi silver,Alpaca.

Hold tight mate they should of phoned first to confirm this not just go and do it. Secondly I didn't think the handbrake worked on the discs but that needs to be checked.

Only 20k on the clock I to would be kicking up a fuss £500 note no way. I want a G55 AMG !! or do I?? will I be waiting for??

There no way they should just carry out £500 of work without OKing it first. Especially if the car was booked in for warranty work!!.....

Have to say that the price does seem a little high to me but as mine is out of warranty it doesn't go very near to a dealer anymore.............

OK not 100% sure but if the car is an Auto I thought the EPD worked by locking the transmission, I standby to be corrected, Bobby where are you.... Speed Limits! not where I live!

It doesn't work on the transmissions like the old LRs. DS3 TDV6 HSE

Well, i've told them to give the post dated cheque and they didn't even look at it..
So we've got some time now. A friend has put a call into the DP and he's going to be in monday morning and has asked for this just to be checked out to see whether this work was required.. and a bit of an investigation to see what went on..

Definitely... especially if they are in to pulling the odd fast one. Let us know what happens  

i wouldnt rely on the post dated cheque. Banks will cash most cheques now without looking at them. And the line i have had off them when they have been cashed early is that they should not be used like that.

Be prepared to stop the cheque, but if your friends dont want confrontation then thats probably not an option.

Its definatly dodgy that they started work on it without agreement from the owner prior to commencing work. They must admit fault there. But i guess where can you really take it?

Only problem i see is that these arguments should have been made prior to driving away with it. And if there could be no resolution i guess you would have to complain to land rover uk head office? Who will probably eventually tell you they actually have little control over the private dealerships.

I had a similar problem with BMW and i would guess that land rover will probably have a similar process, which infact lead nowhere.

Maybe worth getting a quote off a brake fitter (can kwik fit do these? they worked out more expensive on a quote for an X5 i had seeing that they had to use bmw parts to keep waranty valid).

One final thing, i assume the price they paid had a good discount on it, and that they didnt just pay the first price the dealer gave?

Under normal use the rear discs would not need replacing at that mileage, and even the pads would have to have been heavily used to have worn out so soon. The only thing I can think of with this outcome, is that maybe the park brake shoes have been rubbing and have themselves worn and also worn the drum part of the rear discs, thus requiring replacement. However this is not a 'wear and tear ' issue, because if the park brake was operating as it should, then there would be hardly any wear to these components.( Park brake is applied when STATIONARY,and should NOT rub whilst moving). So in my view, wear in these components has been caused by faulty park brake operation, a well known (to LR) fault with both the D3 and RRS, and should be treated as a warranty claim. Get them to go and kick some arse Kam, and Good Luck.
