Transmission Noise - TDV8

Hi All,

Had my 08 RRS TDV8 in to the dealer on Tue and picked it up yesterday due to the radio needing to be replaced (nothing wrong with it but it was marked from new) and the drivers seat was soft on one side and hard on the other (apparently this is common) and I asked them to have a listen to the transmission whilst it was there as there was a slight whine when accelerating gently from about 30mph.

When I picked up the vehicle yesterday, they said that they could hear it but did not know what it was so could I continue to use the vehicle and once it got worse go back.

This I dont mind but I was wondering if anyone else had problems with the transmission? She has covered 5500 miles and whilst I dont hang around, I dont trash her to bits.

The noise sounds like the beginning of a bearing going.

Comments please.

Well, I can only hope that TATA kick some ar Censored and get some after sales support in place. My car is at the dealers waiting for a part that has no ETA on it.... in fact its a "Critical Number Part"?
What that means is it will have to be take off the production line Shocked

How do I know this? Because my old RRS went through the same thing and took 5 weeks for the part.....

I'm not entirely sure on the detail, but I think what you are referring to by 'critical part' is that car manufacturers have to officially report when a car is 'off the road' due to unavailable parts. I experienced this back in the late 90's when I was waiting many weeks for new HT cables for my 96 Esprit S4s.

I believe this has something to do with the fact that car manufacturers are obliged by law (is this via homologation?!) to supply and ensure parts availability for a car they produce, and continue to supply those parts for a set number of years after production of the car ceases.

IIRC that this is why parts for the Lotus Carlton are like hens teeth - because Lotus never homologated(?) it they were not obliged to keep parts available for it. Now every time a Lotus Carlton is wrecked you'll find a mad rush of owners dashing to the particular scrap yard to cannibalise parts to be able to keep theirs running!

It's not just Range Rover who have these supply problems. I also had a colleague who brought a practically new low km demo BMW 330ci back in 2002. The BMW owned main dealer here in Melbourne had to air freight a complete new transmission direct from the factory in Munich before he could take delivery of it!

I'm not sure if there is a any comeback against a manufacturer who isn't able to fulfill this.

Someone more knowledgeable may be able to explain it in better detail, or even correct my limited/wrong understanding.

Good news - its back, the diff came in and part was replaced Thumbs Up BAD NEWS, the noise has not gone, looks like the dealer was right and LR was wrong. They said it was the Transfer Box at the start, now LR technical are saying it needs a Transfer Box Big Cry

So back to the dealers next Friday - got to finish playing war games for the week Whistle

They need to put the listening device on the casing Wokkaman - in 2 different places. Sometimes its the bearing in the rear of the transmnission case where the transfer box goes on. The transfer case was originally designed by NVG new venture gear in the states but it got sold off to part of Chrysler group and I think it has been sold again since. The biggest problem on the early models was hair line cracks in the casing because the first batch LR sent us to evaluate I looked at. They can develope whining noises but they do not usually fail and let you down just get more noisy as they run more miles.
Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

Wokka,

I was tempted to put a post in the spotted section but I think your patientce is probably running thin on the current issue.

So..................

"Spotted, RRS Java black with Chinook Display Team stickers on the rear..... any ideas!?"

Hope we sort it out swiftly for you, and I have been advised that it is a high priority to get rectified.

James Thumbs Up
