Minimum Tyre Pressures for Off-Road - Sand Dune

Well either this weekend or next we are off to Stockton beach to test out the Sand Dune capability of the Sport. The beach runs for about 35K's and is a favourite 4x4 spot at weekends, http://www.openroad.com.au/travel_4wd_daysonstocktonbeach.asp

I have a reasonably new set of Goodyear Wrangler HP 255/55/18 M+S and assume these should be not to bad in terms of Sand dune work as they do not have an aggressive tread pattern. Key question what would be the minimum i could drop the pressure to, they are on standard 18" rims. Many people recommend between 16-20PSI and sometimes lower to get out of tricky situations, but wondered whether i could end up continually throwing the tyre off the rim at that pressure. Any one got experience on pressure setting without major mishaps occuring, in particular when on standard sport footwear.

Ivery, WD or any other NSW like minded people who want to meet up, let me know, i can put it off until next weekend.

Thank god for the D3 site , got an answer within 10 minutes.. yet another Pommie living in Sydney

Steve a number of people on D3 stated i should be okay down to 16 PSI, thought that might be a bit low for the standard tyres, so will see next weekend, need to get a few more bits in the week (staun deflators, Compressor extension cables etc), tried getting the Stauns today but no luck.

Jim, thanks..
Pardon my ignorance, what are staun deflators...i assume they are some sort of device for letting out air???

My beast should be here next week, finally ...so i will soon be in the active club...so am starting buy some gear...

Steve, Spot on, you can set them to a predefined pressure and they will release the air until it reaches the desired PSI, not an exact science so sometimes you have to use the compressor to re-adjust slightly

Let me know when it arrives, and if you want to meet up for an off-road drive, just give us a buzz on here. Stockton would be better with 2, one for recovery

Hi Tastech/Zilch,
I did some beach/soft sand driving at Noosa and it was a lot of fun. I only lowered the tyres to 30 psi as I had one of those cheap little compressors and it still took ages to get them back up to pressure. I used low range with DSC turned off. I remembered from long ago driving a 2 wheel drive Alfa at the Coorong (without even an LSD!), that momentum and always keep those wheels turning is the trick (not too fast not too slow). In the RRS it got pretty squirmy and nearly bogged on several occasions on a soft sand track but I am told lower pressures will help this. The other reason I didn't want to go too low is the beach drive was pretty fast at 80kmh and the sand is quite hard. I am guessing your drive is mostly sand dunes. It sounds like any recent rain would help out. At the end of the day any compressor will do depending on how long you want to hang around at the end.
If it was me I would start at around 20psi and see how you go. I look forward to hearing your experiences and trying it myself some day.

Steve depend where you live, i am not far from Mannell Motors or the Hornsby 4x4 megastore, so will pop round there, they do a lot of ARB stuff.

My kit currently consists of Snatch Strap, Shovel, Tyre Gauge, Air Compressor and not a whole lot more. I was planning to get a metal base plate for the jack, some matting to shove under the wheels if it gets bogged down.

Before the weekend i will get the Staun deflators, a new Air compressor due the fact the one i got from Supercheap Auto keeps blowing a fuse and will not run for more than 10 seconds, I did rewire it from croc clips to 12v outlet plug

but even back on the clips it blows after a very short time

I am hoping to get to Stockton this weekend come what may

It might be worth posting on the D3 site and let them know what you will be mostly up to in off-road terms, or see the Duke Master Pro post in the D3 ANZ section.

i am in the st george area. So there is an ARB in Petersham...

Which air compressor you going to get??

I am only going to be doing light stuff like stockton...or day trips in the blue mountains...nothing hard core..
So I dont want to over capitalise on equipment but not cut corners such that something fails when i need it...

Steve, Not sure what compressor, will do a search. One with a longer cable the current one

if it clips to the battery it cannot reach the offside rear wheel

I will ask around the 4x4 shops to see what is best, but if it as a 12v connector, the max rating is 15 amps according to the fusebox.

As you mentiond Anthony, the firmer the sand the less you have to drop, however Stockton is notorious (or so i have read on some of the Aussie 4x4 forums) for being quite soft in places, in particular around the south end of the beach and dunes, hence why they recommend that pressures are dropped prior to driving on Lavis Lane on the South entrance

Agree, i was going to drop it to about 18 psi and see what happens. Let me know when you fancy a run out, and assuming there are no major mishaps this weekend, then i will be no doubt more than ready for another trip across Stockton.

Perhaps we could arrange a RR SPORT Aus section trip up there

Tastetech (got a first name)/Anthony, i put the tyres down to 18 PSI and not a problem on the sand, i would recommend the Staun deflators, they make letting the pressure down so simple and automatically cut off at the correct pressure (or thereabouts)
